I have converted a movie to dvd vob files but now i have got 2 other files in archive called a .idx and a .sub do i just place these with the vob files as when i do nothing happens so what do these sub and idx files do

You didn't say how you converted. Did you play the DVD to see if it has subtitles?
IDX/SUB files are unuseable in a DVD. If you don't already have subs in the DVD, convert those IDX/SUB files into SUP format DVD Subtitles using SubToSup, and then reauthor with something that takes SUP files as input, such as IFOEdit or Muxman. -

Start about half way down, where it begins "Then select Author new DVD from the DVD Author menu. "
I don't know what TDA accepts, as I don't use it.
