I bought a stand alone dvd recorder recently and decided to try and convert my old vhs tapes to dvd. The dvd recorder I bought was a Panasonic DMR-ES20S. The problem is, I am some what dissapointed in the way the conversion looks afterwards. It almost appears as if the dvd looks worse than the original vhs copy. Again, these are non copy righted movies...mainly old sports clips or boxing matches. I am also recording on what is supposed to be the highest quality speed which usually gives me one or two hours depending on what I record. Could it be because I am using standard video cables as opposed to high quality shielded cables? Thanks again in advance.

It depends on the quality of your VCR, which cables you are using, etc. Component cables are best, then s-video, then composit cables. Make sure that the heads and capstans on your vcr are clean, and try again with either component cables, or s-video. But it will still come down to how good the quality is of your VCR. I just bought a JVC S-VHS vcr, strictly for converting vhs to dvd, because of the quality, DNR, and TBC functions. Some vcr's are much better than others.

I'd suggest looking to the left under DVD Recorders to see what others have to say. If it's a bad recorder all the cables in the world aren't going to fix it.
