I created some DVDs some time ago for which I no longer have the source material I'd like to "extract" several short clips from these in AVI format. What are the preferred methods of doing this, i.e. programs that can do this?

you could use Shrink to grab just the bits you want, then virtualdubmpeg2 or virtualdubmod to convert the clips to avi
