Is it possible to do a very simple title overlay (i.e. character generator type stuff) as part of a TMpgEnc or VirtualDubMod conversion? I just want to superimpose some words over the start of a video clip without having the time/effort penalty of using a NLE.
I tried doing a search for this but "title" and "overlay" are used very loosely and bring up hundreds of hits.

I don't think you can do it without a NLE. It could be done pretty easily in AviSynth using the SubTitle command and then fileserve to your encoder.

Virtualdub has a logo filter. You can use this to overlay stills that have an alpha channel (tga etc)
