  1. Is it possible to do a very simple title overlay (i.e. character generator type stuff) as part of a TMpgEnc or VirtualDubMod conversion? I just want to superimpose some words over the start of a video clip without having the time/effort penalty of using a NLE.

I tried doing a search for this but "title" and "overlay" are used very loosely and bring up hundreds of hits.

I don't think you can do it without a NLE. It could be done pretty easily in AviSynth using the SubTitle command and then fileserve to your encoder.

Virtualdub has a logo filter. You can use this to overlay stills that have an alpha channel (tga etc)

Doesn't that only work over the full video clip? I'm not sure it's possible to apply a filter to only 3 or 4 seconds of video.

Yes it is - there's another logo filter (besides the one that's shipped with VirtualDub) where you can set start and stop frame # (along with fade in/fade out). Check out Donald Grafts VirtualDub filters at http://neuron2.net/
