    I would like to be able to take a video of someone speaking, and insert a still "slide" of some text, but with the audio from the speaker still going, and then go back to the speaker.

    Almost any NLE can handle this easily, but the procedure may vary depending on which one you use. What tools do you have or plan to use?

    In Videostudio you should be able to import the video clip to the audio line of the timeline and then arrange the videos/stills in the video line as desired.

    Edit: You may need to put a video in the video line before you can put anything in the audio line.
