I've heard about hd radio. But the idea of paying a premium for a special receiver is not appealing. Though having track info on fm stations would be interesting.

I do think crisp am would be nice to have.

Not sure what kind of radio she has, but I remember my grandmother's car stereo displays callsigns and Artist / Title info for many of the FM stations in her area. She's in a metro area though, I doubt they have it out here int he middle of nowhere.

No, that's not HD radio. That's normal FM, it just picks up on that part of the broadcast. It's not a really common FM radio feature but my mom's Camry does that.

Hers is a Toyota as well. Probably not HD, but it's at least digital, wouldn't you think?

I've heard that normal FM is capable of doing that but most stations do not use that feature.

HD radio seems like a huge waste of money to me. Plus, isn't the target for all stations to be hd 2016 at the earliest? Here, I've only heard of one station advertising that they are HD.

There are recievers out there that support "HD RAdio" but that I know of there are no stations yet. HD Radio will be free radio like current. Its just a digital signal instead of analog. Kinda like over the air HDTV.

Pay radio is Sat. Radio like XM. I have an XM Radio and I can honestly say that if you drive more then an hour a day its SO worth it. I love my XM Radio. Besides whats $13 a month? Its not that much.

See, now I recommend XM and Sirius over HD. You can get those receivers for like $70 and then just $13 a month. HD radio recevers are, what, $1000? And for just 1-2 stations?

$70? I just upgraded to the new version of the Roady and after a $30 mail in rebate I'm paying $15.

Well the reason I brought it up was the local cbs am news radio station has been touting its "HD BROADCAST".

I was just wondering if anyone was using it. Apparently not.

Ah yes. Good to hear some people are doing it, but your radio would have to be pretty new to have that built in. Also like stated it doesn't change rather or not there are commercials. Just the signal SHOULD be better.

I'll stick with XM. Besides regular radio wouldn't have Opie and Anthony at this point and I'm much more happy wherever they are at.

The information displayed on current FM radios is called RDS. From what I hear, stations can broadcast just about anything over RDS (weather, traffic, etc). When I was in California, just about every radio station supported it.
