  1. I just completed a session with WinDV, which of course by default generates multiple AVIs per session that are 2.8 GB a piece.

Ok, fine, but I am trying to convert the clips into MPG2 format but found that TMpgEnc Plus can't deal with more than one AVI at a time.

I know that I can just append them in VirtualDubMod and write out one big file, but this takes time (esp. on the little USB drive I'm using to hold all the files). Isn't there any way of joining the AVIs in TMpgEnc just for the purposes of cranking out the MPEG2 file?

Join them all in VirtualDub then frameserve to TMPGEnc instead of writing the interim file.
Also, for next time, increase the max avi size in WinDV to capsfer all in one.

Frameserving sends the video directly to the encoder without saving, try it. https://www.videohelp.com/virtualdubframeserve.htm

Umm, yes it can, I do this all the time.

You need to go into the "Environment setting" dialog in TMPGEnc Plus and make sure there's a check-mark at "Open sequence files as a movie". Now, as long as your files are numbered from 00 to whatever (like mymovie.00.avi, etc), it should work.

  5. Open sequence as movie -- Thanks, I overlooked that. You're right, it's not checked.

Frameserver: Wow -- that works great! Excellent tip.
