VCD and 4:3, its bitrate and quality

How does 4 : 3 aspect ratio relate to VCD version 2 ?

I capture at 352 x 288 resolution and 1150 kbps rate and PAL 25 fps
But 352 x 288 is not 4 : 3. Same with the capture rate for SVCD

What's the connection?

What if i increased the bitrate of the movie and then recorded it as a VCD what would happen? the bitrate would get cut back to 1150 or will the quality improve?

The quality i get is not very satisfying when seen on my TV. Why? and what can i do about this?

BTW do vcd palyers playback SVCDs by default?

VCD is 4:3. That's the aspect ratio, not the resolution. It just means the pixels aren't square.
What you mean by bitrate, I'm not sure I understand. The VCD standard dictates a (max, some say) bitrate of 1150 kbps, is all. You can well use a higher bitrate, but then it will by definition not be a VCD anymore. If your player will play such a "VCD" depends on how strict it is with standard compliance.
VCD quality isn't good - low VHS quality at best.
Not all VCD players play SVCD (but most).

The pixels aren't square they are rectangular (wide in this case)..

VCD is a low quality standard. Image quality improves as you move up in standards. Only VCD and DVD are required to be supported. Individual players may support other standards. Check specs at
