I'm currently transferring my VHS to DVD using a JVC Super-VHS HR-S9911U VCR connected via an S-Video monster cable to a Panasonic DVD recorder in SP mode. I'm ripping the finished DVD in IFO mode using DVD Decrypter and editing the files in Womble MPEG Video Wizard. The only "editing" I'm doing is trimming and sometimes joining clips. The VHS cassettes I'm referring to here have multiple events that I wish to save as individual MPG files. Here's my question:

Is there any loss of quality if I A) save (encode) the VOB files as one giant MPEG-2 NTSC clip and then edit/trim/save the individual MPG clips as opposed to B) edit/trim the VOB files for the first clip, encode to MPEG-2 NTSC; edit/trim the VOB files for the second clip, encode to MPEG-2 NTSC; etc.???

The reason I prefer (A) is that the most time consuming part of this process is the encoding to MPEG-2. I would prefer to just let a two-hour clip encode at night so that I can work directly with MPG files the next day. Editing and then waiting for each edited VOB file to encode would be much more time-consuming, but I'm willing to do so if quality would otherwise be compromised.

No need to encode VOB to mpg, since mpg (video) is what's inside a VOB. Just demux it.

MPEG Video Wizard doesn't properly join audio when joining VOB clips together into a single MPG files. My only solution there was VOB2MPG, but now this program is crashing to me whenever I feed a VOB set with DTS audio to it.

And FYI, my VOB set has something to do with Daft Punk (it has DTS audio).
