I have a Sony Trinitron Wega 29" tv, Sony freeview box and a Panasonic ES10 dvd recorder.
I have the aerial connection daisy chained: aerial>freeview>dvd recorder>tv.
Scart freeview to tv av input, scart freeview (vcr) to dvdrecorder, scart dvd recorder to tv.
I am able to watch analogue signal and freeview via the tv ok. I can record tv via the dvd recorder tuner and freeview via the dvd recorder av2 input. Even the smartlink scart function works as the recorder setup via this and I can record directly via the freeview planner after selecting extlink on the recorder.
However, watching and recording freeview broadcasts via the dvd recorder av2 input seems to cause interference (a shadowing effect) moving from right to left across the picture. I changed what I thought was a suspect scart lead and the picture improved but I cannot shake off the shadowing.
I will be upgrading my aerial shortly as there are freeview channels that I can't recieve but neighbours can with an upgraded aerial. I'm not sure whether the signal strength is the issue or I've missed something obvious (or added something silly) to my setup. The interference is only seen via the dvd connection on my tv.
Please help. This is a new recorder which will be used regularly over xmas!!

Do you have any other products like a stereo receiver, VCR, TV or other electronic items sitting on top of or below the recorder? Sometimes the magnetic field from other electronics can cause such interference. It is caused mostly by power supplies. Just try moving things around a bit to see if the pattern is affected.

thanks for your reply. is it possible the scart lead is not shielded well enough for use with this recorder (?). what I really mean to ask is what constitutes a good scart lead/ any recommendations?
tv is Sony KV29LS 30U
freeview sony VTXD800U
dvd recorder Panasonic ES10 (uk model)
sony VTXD800U freeview AV TV to KV29LS AV1; AV VCR to Panasonic ES10 recorder AV (EXT)
panasonic ES10 AV(TV) to sony KV29LS AV2 (smartlink)
aerial daisy chained to freeview (in)>freeview (out) to dvd recorder (in); dvd recorder (out) to TV
also made sure that no power transformers/adapters are close
dvd recorder is in the sony cabinet.
the dvd recorder replaces a vcr which I'm pretty sure was in the same configuration to the one I've described above. -
Is this shadowing effect actually recorded on a disc or it is visible only on a TV screen?

recorded onto disc. (records as is viewed).
The one thing I haven't managed to do yet is obtain alternative scart leads - this may well be the cause.
As a newbie I wanted to check that my setup was configured correctly just in case I'd missed the point or there were known issues with this particular model.
I have checked the tv, freeview and recorder settings and they're all set to RGB. -

Did the problem persist?
If not it is something that has to do with the scart or freeview!.Sincerely Joakim Agren! -
thanks for the help. going on night shift now, then sleep, then tomorrow afternoon at work again - not quite sure when I'll have time to try out and report back but I will....

buy a decent set of scart leads..
thats your problem, one from freeview is poor just now, transferring the aerial picture through the freeview.
my father complained about the same thing, went to the sony centre, got 2 scart leads, and no more problem.
oh,and get a new cable to connect the aerial as well, that could be cheap one in the box,and some are better than others.LifeStudies 1.01 - The Angle Of The Dangle Is Indirectly Proportionate To The Heat Of The Beat,Provided The Mass Of The Ass Is Constant. -
thanks, I wil get new scarts asap.
thanks to everyone for their input. if new scarts (individually screened - right?) do not improve matters I will report back. -
any suggestions on good scarts for the job (uk) as there are so many on offer at such variable prices!
looked at the screwfix site - wondered if these are ok.
