  1. Hello everyone. I have a series of .avi files about 12. I want to burn them onto a DVD, and then have a menu to pick which episode they want to watch. I'm using TMPGEnc DVD author and i have a tutorial on how to Author a DVD MPEG-2, but the problem is, they want u to work with MPEG-2 File format, and i'm not sure on how i can convert a .avi to that format. Anyone have any tutorials out there? Also once the file is done being edited and a menu created. What format do i have to convert the file so i can burn them onto a DVD so i can watch them on my DVD Player? Thanks!

Check out 'Tools' on the left for a Mpeg encoder-I prefer TMPGenc Plus. This will encode to mp2 format. Once you've encoded all files you simply author them together for seamless playback or selectable menu(s)-TDA is ideal for what you want. Once authored, they are already in the required format for burning to DVD.

Check out the 'guides' on the left for 'conversion'/encoding.

Not to be harsh but there is a certain degree of research you must do yourself. Post back if you are stuck and you'll get a helping hand. Good Luck.

  3. Thanks thegeeman and your right I should have researched more but i'm doing this for an x-mas gift so i'm rushed for time! I used TMPGenc Plus, I used the project wizzard and selected CBR MPEG-1 Layer II audio (MP2) under the DVD/NTSC(16:9) I selected the video .avi file and kept the defaults: Video Type: Non-interlace, Field order Top field (field A), aspect ratio 1:1(VGA), content of fideo film movie. Under filter settings i didn't select anything, Under bitrate settings i didn't change the defaults. Then under output file, i just left default and created another porject for batch encoding. Well i ended u pwith the following:
    Start: 12/21/2005 4:58:43 PM
    End: 12/21/2005 6:50:52 PM
    Dealing time: 01:52:08
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    C:\Family GUy\Family Guy Season 4 & 5\Family Guy 401.mpg
    Format: DVD for NTSC (North America and Japan) (MPEG-2 720x480 23.976fps CBR 7999kbps, Layer-2 48000Hz 384kbps)
    Video: C:\Family GUy\Family Guy Season 4 & 5\Family Guy 401.avi
    Audio: C:\Family GUy\Family Guy Season 4 & 5\Family Guy 401.avi

    Result: Succeeded
    Dealing time: 00:41:09

for one of the video files, the problem is, the .mpg has no sound! What happened? and what can i do to fix it so the mpg will contain sound? Thank you!

  5. Hey thanks that worked great!! But I just realized, My new mpg is now: 1.26 GB (1,354,807,300 bytes) for a 20 minute show? Is that right? How is this going to fit on a dvd that only holds 4.7 gigs, is there a way to reduce the file size? My orginal .avi file was only 174 megs! I realize I need to compress the mpg, but i need to leave it in this format so i can use TMPG author to make menu's and stuff to make it easy to selelct which epissode you want. Any suggestions? I have alot of tools at my dispossle, just not all that sure which one to use! Thanks!

Bitrate. Use a bitrate calculator to get the correct bitrate for encoding to your runtime. This will ensure it all fits. Make sure you work with the total runtime for the entire disk, not just per episode.

I must say that I'm a little surprised that you knew how to capture these, yet the process of encoding, authoring and perhaps even utilising the great guides and forum posts this site has seemed to pass you by ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

Rushed for time!!!! Then encode each episode and add ALL to TDA. Once done with TDA, use DVD Shrink to fit to disc. I make no apologies for quality of output as it will more than likely be not as good as it could be.

Ideally, follow what Guns1inger and jimmalenko have posted if you have time-this will yield much better quality.

Also, if you have 12 avi's each of which are 20 mins, then you will almost certainly be stretching it already for quality-I would consider at least 2 discs for much better output.
