  1. ...plays fine in VLC and stutters in quicktime. I though it used QT for encoding...so why the problem?

    This is 7.0.2 if important.

Toast 7 doesn't use Quicktime--it uses Divx 6 for Divx, MainConcept for everything else.....
    Are you using VLC 0.84a?
it seems to play back DIVX 6 content fine over here.....

Are you certain it uses MainConcept for Mpeg 2?
This would make Toast a worthy choice for converting to svcd and dvd.
I like the mainconcept encoder on the PC and do my conversions on it.
It would be much easier to just use toast in most situations and a good choice especially if it does use this codec.

  5. VLC is 0.8.4 but no "a" after it in get info. But it is the program that appears to play the file pretty well.

For grins, I burned it to a disc and the Phillips 642 does intermediately well with it. It has fine stutter instead of a gross stutter like QT. Certainly not normal.

I'm not sure what this mean, but under options for DIVX encoding it has 3 choices: Automatic, Always, Never. Mine was on automatic.

  6. Auto - means encode non-DivX video and non-compliant previously encoded video to DivX format

Always - means encode all video to DivX, even previously encoded DivX

Never - means don't encode any video, just burn the disc - best option for DivX files encoded in another app or downloaded

    ----

Toast installed the DivX QuickTime decoder component which is for playback of DivX files in the QuickTime player as an alternative for VLC - it does not perform that well on G4 or slower machines - best for G5s

Toast also has an internal DivX encoder/decoder for encoding video to DivX 6 and decoding DivX to DVD or for iPod or for PSP.

    -----

Yes, Toast uses MainConcept encoder and decoder for MPEG1 and MPEG2.

  7. So, I take this to mean that since the DIVX encoder in Toast doesn't create a file I can use on my Philips 642, that if I want that, I need to use another app and also not DIVX6...or else maybe there's a firmware upgrade for 642?

My mac is a G4, so that would explain the problem playing in QT.

I have tried Handbrake for DVD to divx...that sometimes does and sometimes doesn't (and I can't figure out the rhyme or reason of it) give a file with good playable video, but the audio goes away at about 40 seconds in. (using mp3 audio).

Any advice on somethin reliable for DVD to divx that will play in a Philips 642 is appreciated.
    thanks

My Divx/Avi files, created with Toast and D-Vision, play on DVP642 if I just dump them on a DVD-RW. I do also have a problem with QT player - stalls and stutters - on anything I use: PB aluminum and PM DP mirrored drive, Panther or Tiger. My biggest problem (I am starting a new thread) is that all my Divx, MP4, etc., are grainy/blocky/pixilated, even if I am at best quality and high bitrates and the final file size is ~2GB, half the DVD from which it was made (the DVDs are not copy protected and are of very fine quality).
