I have been converting DV to XVID using VirtualDub for some time now. Here in the last week or so i have been having a problem converting because it always locks the entire system up at approx. 20% to 30%. I have recently been trying to make it go faster, like for example at one point had it doing something like 8 frames per second. not sure now after a week or so what it was i did exactly. Any one have any ideas aabout what i have done to make it lock the system like this?

What were you doing to try to make it go faster ?
Define 'locks the system' - blue screen ? freeze of everything, crash of vdub ? Details, man, details.
Have you scanned the file for errors before processing ?
Does it happen on all files or just a single problem file ?
Have you tried taking off the case covers and blowing through the case with a room fan while processing ?Read my blog here.

i was messing with process priorities. and various other settings of which i really dont remember for sure.
I would suggest taking off the covers and using a room fan to cool the insides, just to rule out overheating though.Read my blog here.

Here is what I am using:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 1.49 Ghz, 512MB of RAM
WinXP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2
200 GB HD
VirtualDub-1.6.11
Gordian Knot codec pack ( up to date )
XviD-1.0.3-20122004 Final Release ( updated from site: http://www.xvid.org/ )
Sony TRV-480 Digital 8 ( using firewire for capture )
WinDV 1.2.3. ( using for capture ( http://windv.mourek.cz/ ) )
I have been using vdub for a long time to convert my DV files into xvid. Recently I have ran into a serious problem. Short of reformating my hard drive again i dont know what to do. I reformated approx. a month ago. I have ran virus scans with Norton 2006 w/ updates. I have ran scan disk on hard drive. I have defragged.
At first i thought i had messed vdub up by changing a bunch of settings around to but i recently uninstalled and deleted it all from my system and reinstalled it all and it is still locking the system up.
I attempted to turn everything off on my system except bare essentials and running it that way and it actually locked the system up with in a few min. that time. Normally, it locks the system up after approx. half hour to forty five min.
the only way to recover system is to push the button on the case. I tried everything else and nothing will unlock it.
The only big thing that i have noticed is: when i am attempting to set up the full compression on audio, i goto LAME and it looks quite abit different. Not sure why but what i use is there so i haven't tried to figure that out.
Since i have reformated within the month i have infact been adding software here and there so i wouldnt be able to tell if or which one could be a problem if it were. Although i have not installed anything new new to me except three screensavers.
I would suggest taking off the covers and using a room fan to cool the insides, just to rule out overheating though.
any ideas, it would be appreciated cause i dont want to reformat. -
i attempted to process from DV to WMV according to

and the computer locked up half way thru
?????
Ok damn it.... maybe i was wrong. Maybe it is the heat. If so what is my limitations and what is the easiest way to monitor the temps?
Or, it would be really nice if there was a program that would just find the problem for me.....hehehehehe....
man, i do not want to reformat -
MBM5 (MotherBoard Monitor 5) is pretty good, free, and covers a lot of specs. Accuracy of all temp monitors on motherboards is suspect, and can vary from reality by quite a way, however this will give you some indication.
Short of that, let it run and lock, then reboot and go straight into the BIOS. You should be able to see some temperatures (CPU, Case etc) there as well.
To me, the most conclusive test is simple. Pull the case of the motherboard (open the top if it is desktop, pull the sides of if it is a tower case) and run a standard room fan through the case while trying to do an encode that would normally lock things up. If it locks up, you still have a problem (der!), but if it doesn't, heat is the culprit and you can start looking at cooling solutions.
FWIW, I run my full tower will a large fan, and the side of the case off when encoding.Read my blog here.

MBM5 (MotherBoard Monitor 5) is great. I apologize for my instance on it not being a heat issue... according to MBM5 my cpu temp was running at 86 degrees celsius which is way above the 50 to 60 degree limit. If i understand correctly... 70 degrees celcius or above is horrible...
I put a small house fan infront of the tower after taking the sides off and the cpu dropped to 40 degrees celcius with in about 15 min. all the while processing a dv to xvid with vdub.
i will let you know how it ends up... -
guns1inger was right. It was a temp issue. I have now successfully processed some vids.... and am continuing to do so.... thanks alot for all the help it really paid off....
