  1. I'm looking at one of these:

    ATHLON 64 3800+

    or

    ATHLON 64 (3800+) SOCKET 939 (64 BIT) (DUAL CORE)

I'm planning on doing 3D modelling/Video Editing more then anything else. I may play games every once in a while.

The Dual core is obviously more expensive, but would it be worth the money to get the dual core now for future software that supports it?

Or get the single core processor?

Looks at the software you are going to use. If it supports it then the dual core is better for you. If not save some cash.

You might want to consider upgrading to the X64 OS also in the future. IMO, at present, it's not a great advantage. But it is more likely to offer more support for dual core aware programs when software authors take advantage of it.

Like Faustus said, consider the software you plan to use. If you plan to use high end 3D programs, they can cost more than the computer.

Go to the companies and see what they have in the works. If they plan on incorporating dual core advantages into their software, go with it if that's what you want.

I'd say get the prcoessor you can afford, but more importantly get the board that will continue to support your expanding future. I can highly recommend investing in dual core for a number of reasons but if a better Motherboard makes up the price difference between single and dual more attractive I'd choose based on that component instead. You may want to get a 939 dual core over the 754 single core. Check out the DFI LAN Party RDX200 board. The price of that board more than justifies sticking with single core for now if your budget is a concern.
