Do any of the MOV->AVI conversion guides work with QuickTime Alternative instead of actual QuickTime?

Same question for Real Alternative instead of RealPlayer.

    Thanks,

I'm assuming you want to use the codecs included with the two programs to read those type of files in order to convert the formats to AVI?

From the Real Alternative page in 'Tools' to the left:

So the answer the case of Real Alternative is.... probably. If you can read either in Virtualdub, you may be able to convert them. Never tried it, though. You can give it a try and let us know.

I use both of those players as I don't like the 'baggage' that Quicktime Player and especially Real One Player include with their programs.

VirtualDub says "unknown file type". I've been reluctant to ask in the VirtualDub forums for either help or a feature request, since they're very paranoid about "illegal" (their term) codecs, and I'm not sure how "illegal" they'd consider these tools.

I'm right there with you. I want a media player, not a 500TB bloatfest.

I guess I'll start looking at the conversion guides on this site, on a "suck it and see" basis. If I can get one to work with either Alternative, I'll write up what I had to do, and gladly post it.

I *suppose* in a pinch, if I can find Developers' Guides for both Media Player Classic and VirtualDub, I could start looking at ways to make VirtualDub capable of opening anything Media Player Classic can open, which implies the ability to work with both RealAlternative and QuickTime Alternative.

Real Alt, probably QT alt too are illegal since they breach licenses by distributing copyrighted binaries without permision. You can't just take a bunch of real's files, repackage and distribute without permission.

For VirtualDub you need to frameserve via AVISynth using directshowsource(). Works the same as having real player and Gabest's dshow filter installed.

ARGH! I didn't even begin to realise this. I had thought they were maybe reverse-engineering jobs, at worst That kinda puts a dent in several sets of stuff.

That's damn fine news I'll look into it. Thanks.
