  1. I just purchase Philips DVP 642 DVD Player for Divx/Xvid features.

I notice my version number is

    VER 1223 642/37 01 E1

    Manufactured Date May 2005.

Is this the latest firmware version?

Oddly, no. Thats what mine had when I brought it home last week. The web site says 1109 was Nov 05. Because the version number was different, I was hesitent, but I upgraded anyway. Ended up fixing an A/V sync issue I had when FF & FW in Divx videos.

    HTH,
    Andrew
I have been into computers since 1980. Ive been tinkering with DV in one flavor or another since 1990.

  3. 1109 ?

Is it 110905 or was that 110904?

I read some of the other boards, it seems to infer 1223 was latest. and 1109 was 2004.

The av sync issue has been an ongoing issue...and occurs across all of the releases. Usually pausing and playing will correct the sync.

As for the firmware, most of the updates have been for minor things like subtitles and have not fixed any of the hardware issues or file compatibility.

  6. Hmm, I just got my recorder & it was made in August.....

You can update the firmware, but only do it if its necessary. There is a huge 642 topic on left column, dvd recorders.

I havent noticed any difference in playback with any of them. From the comments above, the latest may correct the A/V sync issue caused. Otherwise, I wouldn't change it.

Philips no longer supplies the firmware, mainly because it has been noted that the new 642 players are not able to be upgraded.

Not if the information I have read is correct. Is there a particular issue you are trying to correct? If not, there is no reason or need to mess with the firmware.
