My parents have a Panasonic DVD Surround Sound Home Entertainment System. Is it possible to replace the dvd player part of the system with a DVD recorder? If so, would it have to be a Panasonic DVD Recorder?

As long as the DVD part of the Panasonic System is seperate, you can just swap out with the new Recorder. However alot of Surrond sound packages have the DVD player also as the receiver. If the Panasonic DVD Surround Sound Home Entertainment System has the DVD and Receiver as the same unit then you will need to add the recorder to the surround system. The Panasonic might have an Audio and Video input for another device. If it does then you can add the recorder there.

A DVD recorder (DVR) will function just like a DVD player as far as playing DVD's. Most any brand has the same output connections and will connect to a home entertainment system the same way. In fact most systems could have both the DVR and the DVD player connected at the same time. This is all assuming you are talking about standalone DVD units, not a built in unit.

Buy a video switcher and use both.
Buy a couple and you can also easily switch between inputs for the recorder.
I'm always baffled why video switchers don't get the recognition they deserve.
Even the inexpensive ones work fairly well.
