  1. Okay this has me frustrated to all getup.

First off I can't install another media player/DVD player on this machine. This isn't acceptable in this situation as I was told they don't want to have to open up a ton of different players for everything.

AlsoI know this video is fine as it plays both in my DVD player AND using a 3rd party application from Videolan.org (on my own computer). Lastly I used gspot 2.52 to ensure it is indeed an mpeg-2 compliant video (which it is).
So with that being said I have now tried 3 different codecs all of them are giving me errors upon opening this mpeg file saying that the does not have a codec that supports file playback.

I have now tried Stinky's Codec. I have tried Nvidea's Codec. I have tried Dscaler 5. And I have tried the Windows Xpack.

All of these install fine but WON"T let me run the video within Windows Media Player 10 (even after a reboot, none of these were installed at the same time each were installed seperately).

Is there something I have to do within WMP 10 to enable these codecs?

    HELP I AM STUMPED!

Please try reinstalling your MPEG-2 Codec giving application

    could be:
    Power DVD
    Win DVD (interactual)
    Sonic CineMaster

please reinstall and WMP will play SVCD fine

this one always works with every software player, at least i haven't found one that didn't yet, and there's no need to install/reinstall anything

The only reason why it may not work (since you say you've try it already) is that some other codec 'steals' the extensions, usual problem if you have installed some of the 'codec packs'.

  4. Well I installed both -

    Power DVD
    Win DVD (interactual)

and same problem it plays in their players but NOT in WMP 10 (As I had thought)

I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Stinkys cidec about 5 times...

    No change at all.

Is there any tool that clearly removes all codecs from a PC and so you can try it out from a fresh setup? I am fearing with all of these installs someting may have gone flakey?

Right now WMP will NOT play any mpeg 2 files.

one of your programs or codecs must have some kind of 'watch dog' - a program starting up with your system and stealing the MPEG-2 extensions or more and assigning them specifically to something else with its own codec/dlls not available to WMP. It could have come with some of the programs or codec packs.
If you don't know how to trace it manually to find what stole MPEG-2, then try this approach:
Uninstall everything media related - all codecs and multimedia software you have there (not only players and codecs, but including i.e. video editors etc since many of them come with its own codecs and playback routines; dont forget that i.e. nero 6/7 may or may not - depend on your version - have its own multimedia player/editor and codecs installed too).
I dont know what you have on your system, so use your brain and common sense. If you know something has a "player', "editor" or encoder/codec etc - get rid of it. Note that you may loose your current settings for such app as not all of them store its settings in the registries (and even those are often deleted duringg uninstall).
    Restart.
Reinstall WMP (if its WinXP i think you cant, then just start it up and in its options find formats tabs and assign all the formats you want to play with it).
This should bring your windoze to the 'point zero'.
    Now:
Gradually start adding one by one all the software and codecs you want - reboot after each installation and check what have changed and is it OK with you. This way you can always uninstall offending app since you'll know which caused the trouble right away.
Always do custom install (read below, I just edited my post).
And there is no need to install two or more programs that are doing same things (i.e. PowerDVD and WinDVD). Whats the point, one of them should do

Good luck & Merry Christmas to you and everybody here

    I have said many times on this board before;
overdose of codec on the system always cause troubles.
Windows comes with bunch of codecs already, and what anybody needs else is just a dix codec, perhaps xvid codec, quicktime crap (assigned in options to QT files only), realplayer crap (again - assigned to 'real' shite only) and stinky's mpeg-2 codec to enable playback of 'weird' mpeg-2 files like SVCD in WMP, thats all.
If you want to be thorough - also add ffdshow codec to be able to play DTS, AC-3 and display subtitles etc in your WMP.
If you dont want WMP to play DVD/SVCD, install PowerDVD - it will add its own codecs to play all DVD/CVD/SVCD related files.
I always setup all machine this way and no one has ever any problems and they play anything.
Sometimes you may need some extra codec only but these files are not commonly use by people at home, only if you download lots of stuff you'll need something else (matroska, 3ivx etc garbage).

Whenever you install new programs or codecs - always do custom installation, and uncheck/don't let it steal extensions and formats you don't want it to play (i.e. realplayer will by default steal everything, including DVD, CD, WAV etc etc - everything!; divx always wants to install its own shitty player - uncheck it, select just the codec and nothing else; and almost all of them want to add to startup its own 'watch dog' proggie and 'call home to check for updates' proggies... basically all of them always want to **** up something on your system, so NEVER do default install - go through custom install and set all the options, and still it may not be enough, because i.e. damn realplayer will revert its extensions to default and you will have to reset them upon first use; the only 'clean' stuff i've ever seen is xvid codec installation - its default options are almost correct - with the exception that it wants to steal generic mp4 playback as well, which you may or may not want to be played with this codec).
Avoid any 'codec packs' like disease. They only clog your system with abundance of useless stuff (i.e. who in the world use divx3 to encode their movies anymore?!). BTW - before anyone try to correct me - I don't say codec packs don't work, no. In many cases they do, but the trait is that they install lots of stuff a person don't need, which may or may not cause trouble later.
Don't worry about any missing codec. You can always find it on the web, and usually it will be newer version than the one included in codec pack. Plus - by installing it 'manually' - you will set its options the way it suits you, not its default way.
Last thing you should install are your proprietary media software with its own codecs - i.e. some digital cameras use some proprietary video codecs. Again, when you install them - do the CUSTOM installation and set the formats and extensions in its options, otherwise i.e. Kodak's 'easy share' software will steal your JPG, BMP etc picture formats - causing them not to show as thumbnails anymore etc.

In general follow my 'golden rule': install only what you use, not just because you have it or it came with your new electronic toy (like the 'easy share' crap from kodak - windows xp can transfer all your pics from your camera just fine without it). I'm alwas laughing whenever I see i.e. entire Photoshop suite on someone's system. Probably 99% of people use it just to resize/crop the pictures - its like using nuclear weapon to kill a fly
