Just picked this model up. Says in the manual that it will not record shows with copy protection, but so far it records HBO fine off my Dish Network DVR625. As I had understood, HBO broadcasts with CPRM on. Does HBO only broadcast certain shows with CPRM so I can expect future shows not to be recordable, or did I luck out on a model that ignores the signal via the DVR?

  2. Have you tried to copy any external source?

I purchased one of these units from Sam's Club last week and was able to make a copy of a children's video that I own(it is getting a lot of play time). I then updated the unit to the latest firmware and can no longer record copy protected videos(I own quite a few others that I would like to back up). Stupid me, I did not write down the old firmware number.

    Thanks,
    Steve

I have the latest firmware and have had no problems. I copy HBO programs from my DVR all the time.

I recently noticed that I can back-up CSS-protected DVD's with my DVDR120 also. Every one I have tried has worked (about 5). Hooked up my Cyberhome 300 with RCA cables to the front jacks. A co-worker recently bought a 120 and tried it. He hooked up his Sony player to his front jacks and got the "cannot record copy-protected material" message. He then tried his Apex player and could back-up a copy-protected DVD.
Haven't tried the rear jacks or S-video connection.

  5. What's weird is that I am using the same VCR/cables. Before the FW upgrade I could copy tapes, after I cannot. I have a composite to SVIDEO adapter that I am going to try to see if it makes a difference.
