    Tell us more.

1.) IS it a Toshiba? If yes, stop. If no, go on.

2.) Do you have DMA on your Hardrive enabled?

3.) Do you have an ASPI layer installed.

    I understand Toshiba's don't rip well.

    sebringsc,

I've posted this before, but I think people ignored this because it was kind of
going backwards in performance - at least that's how I see them thinking this
way. But, it really wasn't. In fact, i was just using it yesterday. read on and
see if it helps any. . .

    HISTORY:
    --------------
Currently, i don't do DVD ripping, I don't normally have my DVD ROM player
connected inside my PC. Instead, I just have my CD-RW. But, a few days ago
or so, I needed to do a project that required some RIPPing of DVD's. So, I
decided to re-connect my Pioneer DVD-114 10x speed along side with my CD-RW.
Ok. So, I proceed to RIP the move "Dogma" I was at 0.7x RIPPing speed out
of this thing. I was going nuts. Here I got lot've projects going on and I'm stuck
here waiting just for one .VOB file to RIP. Then, I remembered what I did a while
ago, and proceeded to reboot and go into my BIOS and change my Secondary
Drive (CD-ROM) value from UDMA, to Disabled. I know this sounds like I'm
gonna loose performance (to you guys) but I didn't!! Instead, I gained very
fast RIPPing spees. In re-running my Smartripper's RIPPing of "Dogma", I was
able to gain 9x RIPPing!!!!!!! Yaahoooo!
    End of story!!

  4. it is a Toshiba, i heard the same thing too but by that time it was already too late because i just got into ripping. Looks like i'm gonna have to get me a new one...Sony this time? Lite-On?

  5. either pioneer 16X or lite-on 16x (i believe samsung isn't bad either)

  6. Toshiba's are the worst of the worst, I think their only competition at being worse is Sony.

I'd highly suggest either a Pioneer or a Lite-On DVD drive!

  7. Sefy,

Sony's are that bad? i believe that Sony standalone dvd players suck because not compatible with a lotta formats (i.e. SVCD), but i believe their computer media drives (i.e. CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and CD-RW) are pretty high quality drives.

  8. Unfortunatly (not for me though) Sony is crap at even PC stuff, including DVD and CD and CDRW drives, IMHO I wouldn't even buy a Sony VHS casseste or VHS Player, hell, I don't even like the misreable quality of their TV's, and the annoying technology they call Trinitron (with those nice two stripes that appear on your desk, very good for graphics people who can't figure why the lines won't disapper with the eraser ).

Sony is nothing but a big name for expensive products which cost too much to fix once you run out of warranty!

  9. Sefy, really?

i haven't dealth with that many of Sony's products. the only Song PC product i've dealth with is their CD-RW drives and i thought they were really reliable, unlike philips.

  10. Would you believe that most of their older CDRW's were created by Philips ? interesting huh ?
Especialy Considering the wonderful relationship Philips has with Sony.

As for my experience with Sony, lets see: TV's, VCR's, DVD's, PC Equipment (floppy/cdr/cdrw/monitors/drives).

And each one sucks, I have yet to witness a Sony product that will justify it's extereme price for hurrible quality.

  11. I have to agree with Sefy. I've seen too many Sony CDROMs fail, and Sony DAT drives for that matter too.

  12. Sony makes movies and sells music...they don't want you to play anything copied. I use a cheap $39.95 "Made in China" DVD. Works great (rips a 2hr flick in 9-10 min w/o a glich). Burn with an Acer 12x8x40. No problems. Play it all on a JVC DVD player (plays anything).

  13. heh...i stand corrected...however, i've always stuck with hp cd-rw's and i've been told hp has been using sony to manufature their drives...

but yea...sony is way to expensive for their quality (i.e. that crappy intel)

  14. poopyhead, I think just the HP8100 used the Sony engine, I recall there was a lawsuit somewhere against Philips and it also included HP because they used their engine in all their newer drives.

  15. go with pioneer. I haven't had a bit of trouble with mine. And it's about 3 years old. Had a toshiba that died. No sony experience.

  16. Sefy,

heh..well i bought an older HP cd-rw...only 8x..but i think it's manufactured by Sony rather than Philips...

  17. That is a possibility, just a rare one, and why would you go buy an old writer anyway ? you can get a nice new 24x drive for like 70$

  18. Sefy, i'm not all that into "how fast i can burn a complete CD"....i'm actually only burning at 4X. this is to make sure that my SVCDs will be compatible in more standalone dvd players...in case i decide to transport them.

regarding the 24x for $70...does that include tax and shipping? the cheapest ones are maybe like $75 at least. the lite-on 24x CD-RWs are prolly the best deal for the money, and they're like $80-90 before tax and shipping.
