I'm posting this a bit tongue-in-cheek ... but my curiousity is aroused.![]()
I know that there are ways in which some browsers can be programmed to indicate that the source of the browse is other than its origin IP ... sometimes going through a proxy server or by other means. And in this technical world, I'm curious if the same thing can be done with telephones. For example, is there a way a person could phone someone from home ... where the other telephone would show a completely different number on their caller ID device (say, the number of a local library)?
Feasible?

I know with using calling cards this is possible.

Well, as I saw it done in a movie once; You call the library and they call your wife. They tape the phone handsets together, speaker to microphone. Now you are calling from the library.
The same thing could likely be done through a telephone switchboard, just transferring the call to a different line. I've used a VHF radio link from my vehicle to a telephone switchboard and out through the phone system several times.
But you could use caller ID blocking and your wife would get no number at all. Wait a minute....... What are you up to?
The phone company bases their ID on your phone number that is 'hard wired' to your line. The ID change would have to be at their end, AFAIK.
911 emergency systems bypass caller ID and always see your calling number. -
