I recently purchased a Pioneer 533 and started the lengthy process of converting VHS to DVDs. The manual states that I need to finalize the discs so they can be played in other machines. So far so good, however, after finalizing the discs will not play in my old Sony DVP S-560D, but they will play on my computer (plextor and lite-on drives). My process is record onto the hard drive and then record to a DVD-R, then finalize, that simple.
Something else I have tried is rip using DVD Decrypter, author with TMPGenc and then burn with TMPGEnc, the disc still does not play in the Sony.
I have captured home movies from a DV tape, converted, authored and burned with TMPGEnc and those movies play on the Sony.
Am I missing something? Has anyone else experienced something like this? I am using DVD-R, Verbatim Data Life Plus discs.

Unfortunately, there is no disc or method which will produce a DVD R that will be 100% compatible with all machines currently on the market.

You could try replacing your player. You can also try re-authoring your DVD-R with different authoring software. -
Looks like your player may not support recordable media, or only do a so-so job of it.

What's your manual say? -
The Pioneer does not create an AUDIO_TS folder. This folder is normally empty, but if the Sony looks for it and does not find it, it may cause it to not play.

Old Sony's are famous for not playing anything recordable....even CD-R's.

My Sony DVP-S560D will not play CD-Rs, but it does play my DVD-Rs.
It typically starts to skip beyond 4GB though. -
You have not stated what mode you are copying in, VR Mode will create problems, Video Mode trouble free. Record in Video Mode, finalize and you shouldn't have any problems.
If you are recording in Video Mode and finalizing perhaps you could look at upgrading the F/W on the Sony.
