  1. I have been using a Sony DVD burner for a couple of years now very successfully. However, the other day, I burned 2 movies using my usual Nero on Maxell +r DVDs. When I tried to play them, my DVD player returned a "DVD-r" error message and refused to play them. Has anyone encountered this error before? Could it be a mislabeling or QC problem with the DVD blanks? Half the spindle worked just fine.

    Any help appreciated!

Your player is just giving out a default message that it cannot play this particular burned disc. It has nothing to do with DVD-R or DVD+R. The player is probably pre-DVD+R and just assumes any burn is DVD-R.

  3. Thanks for the response. It's a pretty new player--a Toshiba HDMI upsampling unit that funnily enough is supposed to play DVD + and - r's. I suspect that you are right however, that there is some sort of fault in the burn. The disks play fine on my computer, however. I think I'll buy a new box of blanks and do some experimenting!

    Thanks again,

    Brian

Toshiba ignores the world of DVD+R and DVD+RW even though most models play them equally as well as DVD-R and DVD-RW. Same for DVD+R DL, works fine.

They are a founding member of the DVD Forum, and therefore ignore anything unofficial (like all RW Alliance stuff).

  6. Here's a final follow-up. I downloaded the Sony drive test software and the drive failed the write test--bummer! However, Best Buy has the Pioneer DVR-R100 dual layer drive for $69.99 plus a $20 mail-in rebate. At $49.99, it's cheaper than the Best Buy house brand. The drive has a PC magazine Best Buy status. I bought it, installed it, and it works faultlessly. Normal service has been resumed!

Thanks for all the help and advice,

    Brian
