  1. Will some one guide me how I can create a vcd from the still image viz., jpg, gif, bmp so that it could be run on any vcd player to watch on Tv.
    I use nero5.
    Thanks

  2. You can first check whether your VCD/DVD player is capable of playing a disk with JPEG images. Most recent playes do support. Because if it does then you dont have to create a VCD.

    Are you talking--

    1. Still pic1 -->CLICK to ADVANCE --> Still pic2, etc.?

    or

    2. Transitioned and Music-ed, timed slideshow "movie"?

They have 2 completely different ways to create.

  4. Hi All,
Sorry to jump in...But Scott, could you elaborate on #2. That is exactly what I want to do. SlideShow with music in the bg.
Don't want to spend a HUGE amount of time on it, so an easy tool would be great!! Is there a tool on this site that I could use? I downloaded the 14 day free trial of Nero 7, but I can't find an option to add music or create a slide show.

    Thanks very much!

If you want the 2nd option, any good NLE can do that...
    1. Load pictures, set duration (I usually use 4-10sec. each)
    2. Assemble edit them in (append/concatenate)
    3. Add music under, either timed/edited to pic boundaries or simply append them as well
    4. Apply transition FX (can usually be done globally as well as individually)
--Don't overdo it here unless it's asked for--
    5. Render to 1 long video+audio clip, either as AVI to be converted later to MPEG, or directly encode as MPEG.
    6. Author as single title with chapters(?) and Burn.

Notice that only the last step is part of DVD authoring, the rest is Video NLE realm.

Non-Linear Editor, aka Video (+Audio) computer-based editing application.

Non-linear here means "random-access" or "file/disc/ram-based", as opposed to Linear (tape-based).

    Examples:
    AVID Composer / Xpress
    Sony Vegas
    Adobe Premiere
    AVID (formerly Pinnacle) Liquid
    Apple FinalCut Pro
    Ulead Video Studio
    many others...

even VirtualDub and AVISynth are video editors, although they're not set up for extensive, complicated edits.

Some compositing/animation apps such as Adobe AfterEffects, Commotion, Apple Motion can do editing as well, but that's not their forte.

  8. Hi Scott,
THanks for the explaination and suggestions. A friend of mine (video editor) said that Avid FreeDV would work, but it is finickie about the PC you run it on..I have had to many problems with my work laptop to try that...He also mention Windows MovieMaker. Have you tried that? Any good?

    Thanks!

WMM will make slide shows for your PC, it doesn't create mpegs or VCD's.

My personal choice would be Mpeg Video Wizard.

WMM can make a slideshow and save as (usually) a WMV file or (occasionally) a DV file. I've used it for DV a number of times--usually when I'm given a WMV by a client and they want a DVD from it--like yesterday!

After loading the media, and editing the timeline, do "SAVE MOVIE FILE".
Choose "My Computer", select location, use "Other settings: DV-AVI (NTSC)" (assuming it's NTSC).
It'll take a while to render.

Then use an MPEG encoder (like TMPGEnc, CCE, Mainconcept, etc) to create an MPEG for VCD or DVD. Looks very good this way. Do similar encoding for AC3 audio (if that's the format you've chosen for audio).

    HTH,

    Scott

edit: I personally don't recommend WMM and use it only when necessary. Mainly 'cuz of it's lack of pro video editor features. I've been spoiled by using AVIDs for the last 10 years. I do like Vegas or Premiere for prosumer stuff, though.

  12. Thanks all!!
That Memories on TV software looks right up my alley right now Simple
I am just going to be making a quick thing here for an extra shocking stuffer for my wife...I eventually want to create "keepers" so I will have time to learn those more robust options.
Unless you guys don't like "Memeries On TV"...Again, all I want to do is a pic slide show with music in the background...Nothing spectacular..

    Thanks again!

Or if you want the CHEAP route... VCDEasy (it used to be freeware, now trialware) has the "MPEG Stills" option which does what you want too, but no music. However, depending on the length, it should be easy enough to mux one in later.

Yes Ican play JPEG images.Pl advise me which software to use.
    thanks

  15. Like I said earlier. If your player supports JPEG images then siimply simply copy them on a CD-R or preferably a CD-RW using Nero and put in your player.

The player will automatically detect the disk and display the images on your TV screen one after the other.

  17. A very important point nobody has mentioned is that still images on VCD can be at 720x480 resolution, but as soon as transitions are added, resolution is reduced to 352x240.

Yes, a very important point (although it's 704x480/576, not 720). That's why I usually do the user-advanced stills version. I much prefer the resolution/quality and could care less about transitions. And the music, I can take or leave.

Because then it's not a still, but a movie.
