I have 26 different backgrounds that I use at work to go behind PIP windows for effects. The problem is when I got the files they were letter boxed. Corrently the are 5 mb MPEG 1 files which are about 10 seconds long, once it reaches the end it just repeats seamlesly. My problem is if I put it into Sony Vegas, crop the edges and re-render it, once it reaches the end it no longer repeats seamlesly. Depending on the file format it's either a really bad stall, or just slight. But it looses the effect if there is any stall at all. I was hoping someone could shed some light on why it stalls at the end before it repeats, and what I could do to stop that.

Don't know much about Vegas, but I would import them into Virtualdub-mpeg2. You can resize them and save as DV-AVI or any avi that vegas can easily edit. Make sure to disable audio, as you won't need any. That should give the best results.

I'm not sure why I'd need to convert it to an AVI first if my objective is to crop it then render it, which it doesn't look like virtual dub can do (crop). I went ahead and did it and tried making it an AVI and playing it before even using anything to crop it. When it's playing and it gets to the end, it's a few frames off from being completely seamless, I'm just not sure what to do.

You can crop with VDub in Video/Filters. Use the Null Transform filter then click the Cropping button.

Do as gadgetguy sugested. Do all cropping and resizing in Virtualdub. If it ends up being a few frames too long, you can either trim it in Virtualdub or in Vegas.
