  1. I have an Apex2600 player and a I have a LG DRD8160B DVD-ROM. Some movies I'm able to play on my Apex perfectly but don't work properly on my LG (not just LOTRs). PowerDVD would say the disc is damaged and wouldn't play but my Apex would be able to play it properly. However, some movies play properly on my LG but not on my Apex. This is quite wierd. Can anyone tell me what's going on here or if there's anyway to resolve this?

    Thanks for your time.

My first guess would be that you are talking about disc copies and not original discs...if that is the case, then I expect your issues are media related.

If you are talking about original dvd's, then they should all be playable in both...if they are not, then the discs are either dirty and the drive(s) is having trouble reading them or you are having hardware problems.

  3. The Lord of the Rings EEs are originals. Those played fine on my Apex. I heard of a fix for the LG that will let you play the LOTRs but I hear there's a chance that it'll mess up my DVD drive.
I also tried The Crow 1 and The Crow: Salvation. Both are originals I bought at Best Buy. Sometimes, the movie would just freeze in my Apex. As for Salvation, my Apex sometimes doesn't detect it until I open and close the tray 3 or 4 times. Both play perfectly on my LG though.

Thanks for the info... guess it's time to get a new player.

From what I can tell, the LG8160B is an older drive and I've found a few references to it having trouble reading various DVD's. Most likely a hardware and/or firmware issue possibly related to copy protection schemes on the disc.

As for your Apex, usually if a standalone player is having issues reading discs, especially pressed (store bought originals) discs, then it is either dirty or failing. The problem usually lies in the laser and/or tracking mechanism. Unless it is under warranty, it is cheaper to replace it than to have it fixed.

  5. hmm... I see... I've had both these players for quite a long time so maybe getting a new player ain't such a bad idea.

    Thanks for the info.
