I have a sony home theater from Circuit City, cost me I think $300-$350. Sounds fine to me in my house.

You might want to look for multiple digital inputs. If you have more than just a dvd player and want to hook up a xbox/playstation and the like. Also good to have both coaxial AND fiber optic inputs

Also if you still have a record player check to see if it has a ground and a PHONO input jack. Mine doesn't so I still have an old stereo that does hooked up so that I can play the record player.

The 30 dollars more for the Yamaha is worth it. Neither has HDMI Support. The Onkyo also doesn't support Dolby Pro Logic and has no Composite Video. Basically, for $30 more you get twice the receiver and a more powerful set of peripherals.

    Money well spent.

You never know what the future may hold for your theater. Ignoring the HDMI the Yamaha is still twice the system. From the pictures the speakers look more bulky, but that usually means better construction. If you live near either of these stores check them out and compare if you can. Buying a theater system is half specs and half comfort with it's design.
