Trying to capture DVR recordings into my AIW 9000 Low Profile, using S video connector and the ATI TV capture program. Beautiful picture, hi def and all, but the sound level is too low, regardless of what I do with the Windows sound controls. The output is independent of the volume contol on the cable box. Any way to boost it?

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ATI Technologies\Multimedio\Features\TV\Sound

Value Sound: Defaulted at 244 (left as is)
Value Record Volume Defaulted at 440 (changed it to 175)

There is also one labled User RecVol I left this alone as I didn't know what it was for. It has a value of 1 (for on?)
His was too high. Maybe yours is too low.

    Also check your wires.

    davidra,

when you said you messed with the windows sound controls, did you up the recording level of the line-in on your soundcard where the AIW is connected? Sometimes people will up the playback level which won't have any effect on the recorded audio. If you did this then great! Just wanted to make sure all the bases are covered. Different people have different skill levels with computers so apologies if this is something you have already tried.

I'm coming in the line input from the AIW-8500DV to my mobo 'AC97 Realtek audio chips and often get the opposite problem. The ATI card sometimes but not always sets the line in record volume too high. You usually find this out after recording a clip.

How does the ATI AIW determine the level to set for line in record volume?

I'm not a registry kind of guy, but this is what I see to the right of the Record Volume line: 0x000002c0 (704). Does that mean my default is 704???

I have always assumed I have the hardware hooked up properly, but one thing I have noticed (and I did attempt to change the record, not the play settings in Windows) is that I can't increase the sound with the line in control. In playback, I can increase it with the wave control.

Appreciate all the help. I did manage to increase the sound to a decent level, but only by reencoding the whole thing using TMPG Xpress and normalizing the sound to 100%. Of course, that takes a long long time and there's got to be a better way......Rick

Lord Smurf, any update on this old post? Can you comment on my registry? When capturing using TV, does changing the volume on the software control panel actually change the recorded volume? I can't determine if it actually does or not.....

BTT. Can anyone comment on my registry listings and the volume problems, and how to correct them?

My aiw's have always recorded a bit lower volume then I'd like when using creative sound cards, & if I remember correctly a bit high using a c-media. OTOH, the soundcard will record higher volume audio. Reg setting seem about the same.

Normally I go one of 3 routes - 1) put up with it. 2) run it through an audio app, normalizing and doing noise removal to get rid of hum after normalize 3) record audio via SPDIF using creative software & dsp to convert ac3, then go thru the hassle of time shifting the result to match original wav.

OK.....here's a very basic question that I should have asked before. Really basic. When I open my Windows volume control, the device shown is the Soundmax digital audio. Should I not have the option of the AIW card?

AIW is a video card, there is no audio. Audio comes from audio card, and MMC manages them both concurrently. It works fine that way, because of how the ATI drivers/software/cards are created and function. So no, Windows will not show AIW as an audio device because it is not an audio device.

The AIW audio issue for me is how MMC manages audio levels. It will automatically switch the audio card to Line In and set a level. It even appears to hold onto the level control and not let me make changes from the Windows recording control window. You can make changes in the MMC control panel slider (at bottom) but that seems to get reset to some MMC determined level.

I'm just wondering how MMC determines the level to set and how we can override it.

I have purchased an Ati all in wonder 9000 capture card the last week.
I have the same problem , the only solution is connect the rca cables directly to your Sound card. I hadn't detect any a/v sync problem.
