encoding error

whenever i encode an avi file to dvd ffmpeg i get all this

Can you play the AVI in QT Player?

yes i can play them in quicktime it works fine

In this case, enable the "Decode with Quicktime" option (as the ffmpeg decoder was reporting decoding problems with your file - so Quicktime may work better with it).

i am trying to decode with quicktime for the last two hours and it hasn't got anywhere not a single percent should it be taking this long

Check if the output file increases in size, if yes all is working fine even if the Progress window is unable to detect the exact progress.
