Hope this is the right forum to post this.....

    Help!

    Here is my situation:

I have an NEC DVD-RW ND3540A (which I put in an external USB 2.0
enclosure to be an external DVD burner) and I backed up a movie with DVD dual layer disc from Memorex (2.4x). I used the latest version of
AnyDVD, 1CLickDVDCopy and CopyToDVD to burn the DL disc.
I can play the burned DL disc in the NEC burner but have problem when I put the newly burned DL disc in both my computer (Toshitba
laptop) and a standalone DVD player. Both the computer and the standalone player are unable to even load the DL disc. It kept spinning and reving up and down but can't seem to load the header (my guess).
I checked the burned DL disc and the original movie disc and both
indicated DVD-ROM (type I), according to AnyDVD. However, the
original movie (also a DL) can player in the computer and the standalone player!? I also tried it with a DVD+R (with compression) on the same movie and the resultant DVD+R disc played both on the computer and the standalone. This seems very strange!
Later on, I used DVDShrink 3.2 with Burn Settings for high compatibility
DVD+R/RW (Burn at least 30 mm). The same problem occurs!!
What do I need to do so that I can burn a DVD DL disc such that it can play in my NEC, computer, and standalone DVD player.

BTW, my computer is a Toshitba Laptop.

    Thanks in Advance,

    FMachine

PS: I have used Intervideo software to seem it makes a difference and the same problem occurred......

I would use DVD Decrypter to rip the disk in ISO mode (Mode->ISO Read), then use it gain to write to the DL disk (Mode->ISO Write). If you must (for current protection) run anyDVD in the background.

If you are simply copying a DVD to a DL disk, with no reauthoring going on, DVD Decrypter still seems to be one of the best ways.

Use VERBATIM DUAL LAYER media instead of MEMOREX. As gunslinger mentioned use DECRYPTER to read and write when burning DL media.

I agree with the Verbatim comment. I had no problem burning Memorex and Ritek discs but neither will play in my Sony standalone DVD player or my computer DVD drive (the one that they were burned on) (they load but freeze as soon as they hit the second layer). With Verbatim I have had no problem whatsoever.

  5. I always burn my +DL with Nero and the book type set to DVD-ROM. They can all play on any DVD players. You may have a try.

Just a dumb question. Does your other system have a dual layer supported drive? Does your standalone support dual layer discs?

    ROF,

I think the standalone and the dvd rom in my
laptop can play movies which are dual layer.
So I don't see why they don't support DL.....

So this is a common problem with Memorex DL
discs? Or could it be hardware related to my
    NEC burner?

Possibly both, but there are some who have gotten the Memorex DL discs to work, and Memorex is a large company (they wouldn't sell stuff that just plain doesn't work, would they!!?? ), so it is more likely that your burner doesn't like the discs for some reason. Only hope I think is for a firmware update to your NEC that works w/the Memorex (Ritek, I believe) DVD+R DL discs.

I bought a 3-pack of the Memorex DLs, and got 3 coasters out of the deal. Never again, at least not until I see "improved support for Ritek DVD+R DL discs" in the Pioneer firmware release notes (I have a Pio DVR-109).

Thanks for the advices regarding quality of DVD DL.

I bought some Verbatim DL and one of the standalone
can play the burned Verbatim but had some difficulty
    reading the second layer....

So this proves that Memorex DL are "junk" in some sense.

BTW, I tried to backup the movie using NERO and
specified the burned DVD to be in DVD+R but it
still is in DVD-ROM format? Is this related to my NEC
ND3540A not having the updated firmware version?

And how do I update firmware? Thank you.

I am having a similar problem to fmachine. I have the NEC ND-6650-A, and i just burned a DVD+R DL. When i tried to play the DVD on my laptop, desktop, and dvd player it would spin, but the screen stayed blank.

The Media i used was Fujifilm DVD+R DL, are these discs shit as well, and can you guys answer the firmware update question for me 2?
