    Hi,

I have a dmre55 panasonic dvd recorder(chose it after reading good comments on this website) which i've only used with 1-4x media. I was once given some 1-8x disks and it wouldn't accept them but they were a brand I'd never heard of.

Now my Mum has bought me a pack of philips dvd-r 1-8x disks, individually wrapped, so I'm worried to test them incase they don't work.

I've looked at the compatibility lists for my recorder and philips media, also searched the forum but found nothing definite.

I'm pretty sure the disks will work as i noticed a couple of the other panasonic models accept them. Also the man in the shop told my mum they'd probably be ok.

But I don't have much knowledge of dvd technology so it would be really helpful to hear what others think first.

    Thanks

    I can't remember the name.

So, sometimes a x4 dvd recorder will accept x8 disks but only record in x4?

  4. A standalone recorder without a HD records in real time, there's no 4x or 8x recording. I never had a problem with Prodisc 8x discs.

I use the cheapest 1 and 2x media I can find for use with my standalone... yes, it does still exist (and they're almost given away with breakfast cereal these days it's so cheap).

I've got a Lite-on 5005 that is known - amongst other things - for writing to practically anything if it's the right size and has a hole in the middle, and have found when recording off air it's cheaper to use DVD's than video tapes - and the quality is better, too.

One point to note - if you have a hard disk based standalone recorder, chances are it will record to a blank faster than real time, in which case discs rated at a higher speed could be worth your while. However I doubt the manufacturer will use the latest drive AND the latest firmware all the time, so I would not expect there to be many 16x standalones out there at the moment. The last one I ran in to was writing a full disc in just over 15 minutes, suggesting a 4x writer and a bit of buggering about getting its act together beforehand.

Panasonic DVD recorders are notorious for hating 8x media, including even the best discs.

See, now that's another one of those weird things that people say about panasonics
I've used 8X pretty much exclusively and never had a problem in 2+ years, although i did have a stack of memorex and about 23 out of 25 F'ed up bad in it, but those were 16X.
Never thought about it till just now and grabbed one to check the speed, but i've never had a problem with 8X media in mine.
