  1. I want to make a dvd that will encode the video files into vcds however I'm having a run in with format issues. I have Mpeg's and AVI's and I want to be able to place both on the same.

    I currently have these programs

    DVDSAnta
    WINAVI converter
TMPEnc Xpress, DVD Author, all of the tools just bought them alittle while back and love them
    VCD EASY
    NERO(lastest v6)

However when I convert the avi to mpeg 2 with WINAVI the quailty falls tremedously. I have ripped my dvd to avi and in avi it looks wonderful, but after converting to mpeg it looks choppy and blocky.

Can anyone tell me a good program that will allow me to burn avi, mpeg and so on onto a dvd so I can fit numerous video files onto it in vcd format?????

Encode whatever source you have to VCD compliant MPG (=mpg1).with TMPGEnc. If you do have a DVD source, don't take a route via AVI, as that will unnecessarily degrade the quality. Read quides on "<input source format here> to VCD" (concentrate on those involving TMPGEnc) and follow them but stop after creating the mpg.
Once you have it all in VCD format, author with TMPGenc DVD Author.

Assuming you are converting to decent quality avi, there will be a drop in quality to VCD.

    VCD is roughly VHS quality.

To get the best result, skip the conversion to avi completely as mats.hogberg suggested.

There is a chart at the bottom of the "What Is - VCD" page to give you and idea of how much data/quality you are removing.

Tonemgub - I offer this as a helpful suggestion. Frankly, I'm not sure at all what the heck you want to do. You are mixing terms in a way that makes me think that you yourself may not really understand what you are asking about or if you do understand what you are talking about, you don't know how to adequately describe it. Mats and Krispy are assuming they know what you want to do and I'm not at all convinced that what they think you want to do is what you want to do.

What exactly do you want to do? Do you want to turn your AVIs into a DVD or a VCD? Maybe you are under the mistaken impression that you HAVE to use MPEG-1 video to put a bunch of movies on a single DVD disc. You don't. MPEG-2 can also be used at low bit rates if you like. I was given a copy of an excerpt from an SVCD dub of _Kill Bill Vol. 1_ where the guy who made it used an average bit rate of something ridiculous like 900 Kbps and it looked better than VCD quality. He did something like 20 passes in CCE to encode it and used a VBR running from about 600 to 2500 or so and while it was not as good as the original DVD, frankly it was better than it should have been at those bit rates. The point I want to make is that you don't HAVE to use MPEG-1 on a DVD if you want to use low bit rates to save space. MPEG-2 can also be used.

Do you maybe really want to make VCDs from your DVD? There is no need to go to AVI first and in fact I would recommend against it. You can convert directly from ripped MPEG-2 video files to MPEG-1 for VCD using something like TMPGenc.

  5. Sorry Jman98 if I was not clear, I was in a hurry had to leave. Ok let me start over

    1. I have avi. and mpeg files on my computer.
    2. I want to be able to burn them to a dvd
    3. I want to be able to burn multiple mpg and avi files to one dvd
    4. When I use nero it converts a small mpeg or avi. file into large dvd files; only allowing me one at the most two movies on a dvd. And (S)VCD option only allows a burn to a CD-R/W
    5. So I use TMPGEnc DVD Author too burn the files to a DVD. However I cant put the avi files that I have on the DVD without converting right?
    6. I then convert them with WINAVICONVERTER which degrades the avi files like crazy.

Now for what I want (And Yes I have read guides)

    5. I want to be able to burn my mpeg and avi files without reduction in quality. I want to be able to put the mpeg and avi files on one dvd together.

Now what should I do?? Sorry for my bad translation of thought. I really do apologize, I understand were your coming from.

You need to convert your files with TMPGEnc (the encoder) not TMPGEnc DVD Author. The "encoder" will create the dvd ready mpeg files while the "Author" program will accept DVD ready mpegs and create the menus and file structure to make a DVD.

Lots of guides for what you want to do, look 'em up.
