I tried to reencode this certain MKV file I have using mkvextractgui. To my surprise, the video stream is encoded in MP4 according to the program. Is there any other way to rip the video out (I already ripped the other streams without problems) since mkvextractgui doesn't seem to support MP4, and Vdub Mod can't also handle the video stream too.....

You mean native MPEG-4 part 2 (V_MPEG4/ISO/ASP)? Don't think mkvextract currently supports it. Perhaps mencoder can demux? Err scrap that it doesn't even seem to support native mp4.

Double checked, and the streaqm is actually (V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC).

Ahhhh, no problem then. mkvextract can extract native AVC fine. Will give you a raw (*.264) stream which you can then remux to mp4 via mp4box or mp4creator. That is assuming that you want an mp4.

Funny, my mkvextract tells me it can't extract that stream.

Lemme check again.... maybe my mkvextract's an old version.

What'll I do if I want the stream to be in avi?

Why would you want an avi? What plays an AVC avi that can't play an AVC mkv? Well ok you can leave out installing an mkv splitter for say wmp, but you still need to install an AVC decoder so it doesn't really make that much difference.

That said, if you really, really want an avi you can use avc2avi to remux the raw stream to an avi.

I want it to be in AVI because my final product would be a VCD-compliant MPEG....

    Unless there's an easier workaround....

That would be like saying I wanted a new car so I bought a motorbike. If you want a VCD convert to VCD compliant MPEG-1.

Wait, wait. Let me clear it up.

I have an mkv and I wanted it to be in VCD compliant MPEG1. I have successfully ripped all other streams except the video, which is in AVC format. And the only way I have been successfully made my MKVs into VCDs was by making the video stream into an AVI.

    So uhh there ^_^

If you want an mpg, go for an mpg, forget about avi.

    But how?

The only way I know of converting MKV was by going thru mkvextract or Virtualdub mod... both of which requires the video stream to be changed to AVI...

Neither of those can output to mpg though. Well ok you could use ffmpeg or yMPEG in VDubMod.

I tried to open the MKV in VdubMod, but it can't show the video stream...

I only need to have the h624/AVC codec right? I think my codec's broken though...

VDubMod will only work if the AVC stream is stored in VfW compatibility mode. It doesn't work for native AVC such as what you have.

So I guess there's no way around it as of yet...

I guess I'll wait for somebody to figure this out...

Thanks for the lots of info ^_^

Like I said, just convert directly to mpg. No need to open in VirtualDubMod or convert to avi.

OK wait. I found another file, this time an MP4 file with H624 video stream and AAC audio. How can I convert it to VCD-compliant MPEG1?

TMPGEnc is generally regarded as pretty good and free for MPEG-1. Load the mp4 and then a VCD template or use the wizard. Encode and hopefully everything is in sync and ok.

Hmmm.... tried it and TMPGEnc cannot show the video stream while encoding (had my previews on).

Do I need to have the H264 codec on my PC? Cause right now I use VLC to view these files I have....

VLC uses built in decoders/splitters if you want to use them then you need to use it for encoding.

Yes you need an encoder installed. It works fine here with ffdshow, you need to limit the output to RGB24 first though.

Really though if you don't have a video decoder, etc. installed then TMPGEnc should simply refuse to open the source.
