I have some truly awful VHS tapes (5+ generation copies) that I had previously been unable to duplicate to DVD. For a quick and dirty solution, I bought a VHS/DVD player/recorder (Panasonic DMR-ES40V), thinking that perhaps if I cut out the cable connection I might have better luck. This thing seems to have a glitchy proprietary formatting on DV-R which makes DVD Shrink unable to even SEE THE LIST of files in the VIDEO_TS folder and caused Clone2 to error out (invalid DVD structure). My workaround (I have no idea why or how it works, just that it does and thought someone else might benefit):
DVD Decrypter (1st rip)
Clone2 (re-rip Decrypter-generated folders and remove what appears to be duplicated segments)
DVD Shrink (can now read the files)
Everything looks great and works on other standalone players.
If anyone has any thoughts on why this works and also has the time to write it out, I'd love to hear it.

I think you'll have better luck using dvd -rw discs rather than dvd -r discs. I have had absolutely no problem with my ES30VS, the ES40VS is simply the same with a DV port.

Thanks for the info!
Unfortunately, those don't happen to be part of my inventory. Typically I use DVD+R. I recently purchased some DVD+RW (prior to getting the Panasonic and which this device doesn't recognize) as well as some DVD-R, simply because they were a great deal LOL. Once these awful VHS tapes are finished I'll be getting rid of the Panasonic as, for video capture, I have a GoVideo machine that I like better and I do plan to acquire a JVC SVHS VCR with built-in TBC...I just didn't have the time to do so just now and the need was urgent.
I'd much prefer to use DVD-RAM (more options using the Panasonic) to get my first pass files but my DVD burner doesn't read RAMs...c'est la vie I suppose
