Help with xvid to dvd/mpeg conversion

Hi, here's my problem. I have some video's in xvid format. I would like to convert them to mpeg so i can make a dvd with menus for a standalone player. I have tried winavi convertor but the output file never plays. I have also tried premiere pro 1.0 and there is no sound on the output file. Can someone tell me either what i'm doing wrong or if their is an easy way to do this.

but winavi should work...does it not work on your standalone dvd player or/and software dvd player?

hi, thanks for replying,
winavi didn't work, when i convert the file and try to play it it doesn't play. What i'm trying to do is to convert the file to mpeg and then put them all in adobe encore so i can make a dvd so i can choose which video i want to play, sorta like a tv show dvd.
What am i doing wrong? are my settings messed up?
