Scan.co.uk has recently been promoting the Ellion range of DVD-Recorders, but there doesnt seem to be much user feedback on the 950S.

The 530S uses the LSI MPEG Encoder, so it should be reasonable quality, however it does not have a HD. The 950S has a 160GB HD, but I dont know whether it uses the LSI Encoder - I expect not since it is not listed on the LSI website.

Does anyone have information or opinions regarding the 950S?

I might buy one, but £240 is a bit steep just to see whether a Recorder is any good. The 530S seems good, but I don't really like the idea of a DVD Recorder without a HD - media is often a bit hit and miss.

Last I knew, all Ellion decks were on LSI chips. May just have to buy and try. Take it apart and see what chipset is inside. The Ellion units are like most, 3-4 screws and no anti-warranty stickers, easy to open and completely safe.

As far as hit-and-miss, hard drives are no better. I actually feel safer with a DVD-RW that I can trust, like MKM or SONY. And then I edit on the computer.

Thanks, that's helpful. If HD's arent really beneficial over DVD-RW then I may need to rethink what I need.

I might just go for the Ellion 530S - the only disadvantage with this is that it does not have component input - although it seems difficult to find LSI encoders with component in (other than liteon which have a few nasty problems with their implementation).

Can you recommend a specific type of MKM/Sony DVD-RW?
