I am having some troubles with Premier 1.5 pro with m2v format.
Some times Adobe premier it stuck and I have to quit and open the program again.
It’s any plug in that I have to install so Premier will not have problems with m2v format.
It only stuck when I edit m2v files.
With Avi files I don’t have the same problem.

Premiere Pro 1.5 is not very good at editing .m2v files. I have had the same problem and gave it up completely. If this is possible edit your file in .avi. If you are starting from an .m2v file, edit with another software.

Most desktop editors prefer DV based source material. They may work with others, but behavior may be unpredictable.

There are didcated mpeg editors, including womble VCR, cuttermaran and videoredo. They generally aren't as fully featured as soemthing like premiere or vegas, but they are built specifically for mpeg editing.

The problem is that mpeg was designed as a viewing codec. The compress is temporal, meaning that frames are compressed based on the content of frames before and after, and only certain frames (I-frames) contain all the data required to create a single image. To view the frames between I-frames requires rebuilding them by look backwards to the last I-frame, and the subsequent changes. It makes for hard going when trying to smoothly scan through frames or to edit at a frame accurate level.

(Note : the above description is grossly simplified and may therefore not be 100% accurate, but it gives you the general idea)

Look at one of the mpeg editors to see if it suits your needs better.
