  1. Hi,

If I edit MPEG 1 files after making them in TMPGEnc using Ulead Media Studio and then save them as MPEG 1 will I loose quality?

What I would like to confirm is whether or not the MPEG file is encoded again and if so what is the end result in quality?

The reason for not editing the AVI files prior to encoding is shortage of disc space as the AVI file is over 10 Gb.

    Take care

Make sure the avi is good quality.I have yet to see any substantial quality loss when converting. As for space,if your avi is 10 gb,and your converting to mpeg, your output file is going to be at least twice that if not more! I have
Media Studio, but I really only use Tmpge or virtua dub, both free.

    Dave, (oops, not count)

It may or may not be re-encoding your mpeg file. Probably depends on several
factors, like if you're using ANY special affects ( trans/overlays, etc. ) ...just the
slightest and there will be some (though minor) re-encodes or partial encodes
from the edited part of the clip.
I experienced this with MPEG2VCR. Took me a while before I decided to pretty
much give up on it, unless I have to use it. I would use MEPG2VCR to cut whole
MPEG2 files into pices - a great app to use for this, BUT, theres this nasty glitch
of studdering or jerkeyness when you're playing your CD in a dvd player and you
press the skip button to the next clip or when you clip finishes and moves on to
the next clip. It would studder like for 1 to 2 seconds. Gets kind of annoying
    after a while.
I don't know if Ulead has these same issues, but you may want to make note of
this glitch if it concirns you.

I was wondering about your process - capture/encode/edit/burn/play in dvd...
    * R U cutting out commercials and things?
    * Have you used Virtualdub? You can use VD and cut your commericials out
and frameserve to tmpg into a one large mpeg or into separate mpeg clips and
burn to cd. I use this method cause I can make sep. clips and use my skip key
on my report during dvd playing. much easier then setting up a menu or whatnot
    or FF'ing to scenes.
