I have yet to encounter this in any specific searchs, and a friend referred me here, so here goes. I have a Windows Media Center Edition PC and it is currently connected on the same network with my Xbox 360. Everything is installed correctly including Windows Media Connect and Windows Media Center is running great on the 360. However here is my issue. Although it will stream regular video files from my PC to the 360, any video that requires a codec on my PC to play (i.e. DivX) do not play on the Xbox 360. I recieve the following error:
Cannot Play Video.
The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct codec (a file the compresses/decompresses audio or video) is not installed or the file is corrupt.
I know the file is not corrupt because I tried various files and I recieved the same error on them (once again, they work on my PC fine, with DivX codec). I have come across some information stating that those types of files will in fact not work on the 360. So my real question then becomes: is there a way to make these codec required videos play on the 360 (any "workaround")? Or will I have to convert these to WMV (if that is possible) or some other file the Xbox 360 recognizes to be able to play them through my Xbox 360 Media Center on my television?
I'm sure that this will become a common issue, but given the small amount of people that own an Xbox 360, and the even smaller amount of people that have an Xbox 360 and a WMCE PC I hope that it will be possible to get some answers. Thank you.

Looks like the only workaround would be to buy a network media player from d-link or hauppauge. I have the 360 and no WMCE, just Pro. Does pics and music, no video. With Vista coming next xmas, hard to blow money on a new OS when for $99 i could just get a box that supports the media or burn to cd/dvd and play on my divx dvd player.
Also, I might suggest that who moderates the forums add a seperate section for xbox 360/PS3/media centers section to narrow down a lot of Q&A. -
My apologies however, I am PC illiterate. Will a network media player allow me to play the codec files through my 360? After all, I paid over $400 on the system alone, I would like to atleast be able to play any video files just like I do on my PC.

yeah i think i will wait a while before going for a xbox 360. afterall since im running xbox media centre on my normal xbox i can play dvds, divx, xvid,mp3 and everything else on my normal xbox either from its hard drive or from my connected xp pro pc. dont have a need for the 360 as far as media playing goes when the normal xbox can do it.

i would recommend a xbox forum,
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php
i might add a htpc/media center in the future.
