In reality VOB files are MPEG2 ones with subpicture and navigation private streams. Size of both of them is too small.

    What do you need a
    transfering
    for?

They are DVD's that i bought. However, the subtitles do not fit on my TV, they get cut off..I wanted to see if reburning them as mpeg's would fix the size problem.

Are the subtitles burned into the image, or propper DVD subtitles ?

If they are burned into the image then you will have to resize then reencode to correct the poor placement.

If they are DVD subtitles then you may be able to change the position of the subs using IFOEdit. You would have to rip the disks to your HDD, then alter the IFO files, then write it back to disk.

I suspect that they are burned onto the image. When I play them on my computer in windows media player or whatever, I can read them just fine. Its only when I put them up on a Tv.

Do a search for overscan and you will find dozens of responses to this problem. You will have to resize the image down, add black borders all around, then reencode. The easiest solution is to load the video file into FitCD, and use the avisynth script it produces to frameserve to your encoder.

I put the file into FITCD and it says that the DVD is in the PAL format. I think I need it to be in NTSC dont I? I guess that could cause the problem. IT seems that PAL is stretched vertically slightly more which is causeing the cutoff.

If you can see it then your playback device is converting it OK. Perhaps the distortion is from the conversion, but it won't help the text being cut off as both have a width of 720 pixels. Converting PAL to NTSC seems to be more trouble than it's worth, but there are plenty of guides here to show you different options. The favourite seems to be the method based on DGPulldown, so that is probably a good place to start.

    SubEdit may help you out:

SubEdit allows you to visualize and modify some aspects of the subtitles in an already authored DVD. Subtitles can be moved up and down directly inside the VOB, without the need to demux/remux the subpic streams. Simply drag/drop one or several VOB files onto the main window.

If this is the case, subedit won't be able to help.

At least it may help confirm/deny his suspicion that they are burned in.
