  1. I have a three year old projection 50" sony tv with RGB connectors, standard composite connectors, and a dvi connector. THe tv is HDTV ready. I am fixing to buy a new dvd player as the one in my bedroom has broken. I see the new dvd players advertise upconversion to a 1080 hd compliant signal. My question is: 1) Will a backed up dvd play in the dvd player through the hdmi connector and an adapter at the tv dvi or will the copy protection block it? 2) Do these dvd players output the 1080 res through the RGB component outputs also?

  2. Get an OPPO DVD player(~$200USD),it outputs to DVI and upconverts.
DVI is a digital video signal,HDMI combines digital video and audio, component is analog video and is limited to 720x480p.The next generation DVD players will use HDMI with HDCP(copy-protection) but the HD stuff will only play on newer HDTV's with HDMI.
    A:
    1.Yes it will work.
2.No component is limited to 720x480p,use DVI->DVI for best picture(720p,1080i).Most CRT/LCD HDTV's will upconvert composite or component to 720p/1080i but I doubt projection tv's can.

Also, I have read that DVD players that do upconversion cannot upconvert copy protected content (IE: store bought DVD's). So with that in mind, any backed up DVD's that have the protection removed should be able to be upconverted.
