    This is my parent's laptop. Defragmenter won't even open up, and I've never seen this before. Any answers?

    Defragmenter is a extension snap-in and the pointers to it may be messed up. You would have to check with MS to see what the solution would be in that case.

    But you should also be able to get to it from Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage.

    Some antispyware programs can cause no access to Defragmenter. Try shutting down all unneeded programs and try again. The easy way may be to boot in 'Safe Mode' and run it from there.

    might try ruunng system file checker, may be prompted for the original install cd

    start>run, type in box: sfc /scannow
