I'm afraid that's too general of a question to be able to answer. If you have a specific codec in mind, you might get an answer. But there are so many variables even with a specific codec that it would be very difficult.

In general for AVI work, I use the Xvid codec. It's free and creates very compact video files. The settings depend of what you want to do with the video, what format the original is, how much space you have, what quality you want, etc., etc.............

You might look here for some information: http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:BzbP7_wtM4EJ:ronald.vslcatena.nl/docs/xvidfaq.htm...ient=firefox-a

Sorry, it's not as simple as just saying 'Do this'.

If you want a fairly easy way to convert video to Xvid or Divx, you might look into FairUse Wizard or AutoGK.
