I was in a pinch over here and stumbled across a SVHS-c camcorder. I cannot find SVHS-c tapes however. I'm in Japan and can't wait on ebay to get tapes. Weren't people making holes in VHS tape and using it as SVHS years ago? Can that be done with compact tape? What is the physical difference between the tapes?

I used to be able to get S-VHS in Japan. It used to be cheaper there, so I'd stock up.
A SVHS-C camcoder will still use VHS-C tape, it will just limit luminance bandwidth to 3MHz (~240 lines) vs 4.5-5 MHz (350-400 lines). Drilling out the plastic hole to make VHS tape look like SVHS will not necessarily get you higher quality.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
