  1. Since I can't resolve the hiss problem on playback of captured avi/mpegs, I've decided to buy a new soundcard.Any recomendations of a reasonably priced card, hopefully around $50? Btw,I'm using an ATI TV Wonder PCI, PC Chips M766LMRT2-AT mobo and Windows 98.

  3. What is your current soundcard that is giving you problems?

  4. IMHO the best sound card out there is the sound blaster audigy card. it sells for around $100 without the break out box. its a bit more than you wanted to spend but if you can afford it i suggest you get the best.

  5. It's a C Media CMI8738 / CD3X that's built into the motherboard.

I Have a Sound Blaster Audigy MP3. I love it! I was using
the sound chip that was on the Motherboard. Could not control the input level. Got the SB Audigy and no more problems.

  7. Buy the Creative Audio Player soundcard...
    It kick's ass... =)

  8. I have a SoundBlaster Live Value and it cannot capture at 48khz UNLESS you use the creative software. Videocapture stuff will only capture the audio through the card at 44.1khz. I'm looking for another card that will truly capture at 48khz...

  9. Turtle Beach Montego II Plus. It has digital I/O (both S/PDIF coax and optical), as well as the standard analog lines in/out. It also has an extra analog line-in.

The hiss is neglegible. When I first plugged in with headphones to listen, I thought it wasn't working because I could hear nothing, not even the slightest hiss.

Very good card. I bought mine for $149 (a bargain at the time). Since then it has come down. I saw it six months ago at $79. It's probably $69 now.

I bought it for making CDs from analog and digital sources (cassettes and DAT). It's a great card. Look for it at CompUSA.

  11. I just read this on Turtle Beach's web site...

    Static noise*

This can be caused by noisy computer components and might happen whenever your hard drive is active.

    1. Disconnect the CD Audio Cable to see if it picks up static from the noisy environment.

    2. If this is the case, try threading the CD Audio cable through the other computer cables until it is quiet.

    3. If this does not work, you may obtain a heavy duty shielded CD Audio cable from Pacific Interconnections at (800)706-0510 or (40654-0234.

    * "static noise" can sound like hiss.

  12. I love my X-Gamer 5.1. It has a descent software bundle, amazing sound quality and supports all the major gaming formats (A3D, 2.0, EAX and EAX 2.0) I have been using it in conjuction with my AIW card for excellent results in capture and playback. You can get one online for around $70 bucks shipped. I have to say, I had the Turtle Beach card for 1 day and immediately returned it....I know others have had troubles with Soundblaster 5.1 series....I guess it depends system to system. The 5.1 series and the Turtle beach series are pretty comparable when it comes to features.

  13. two new suggestions-

if you have the money, i'd take the turle beach santa cruz cards over any SB any day of the week.

if you're tight on cash, aureal vortex sq1500 or vortex2 sq2500. 4-channel, 93-96 dB S/N, digital output, and you can find them through pricewatch or ebay for < $20. the company's out of business now, but they're solid cards and the drivers and support are available on the web at http://www.vortexofsound.com

just a personal observation but i have never been able to find competent drivers for an aureal vortex sq2500 sound card running under win2k. i found a few drivers but nothing reliable and it was a regular happening to loose all system sound. IMHO do NOT buy an aureal card at any price.

the turtle beach line of sound cards are comperable to the sound blaster LIVE series of cards. again if you have the money and want the BEST get a sound blaster AUDIGY sound card, there is nothing around that can touch them and they define the next generation of sound cards.

actually, that's what i'm running right now. i've used the x.2040 drivers from aureal, but when i reformatted a month ago i realized it was easier to just use the MS WDM drivers that came on the win2k disk. they're version 5.0.2184.1 if you're interested...

  17. thanks patrickm i appreciate the offer but it is no longer needed as i love my audigy card. i think my round about mis-stated post should have said aureal is no longer in business so current driver support is spotty and future driver support is solely dependant on user development. i would suggest not purchasing products manufactured by defunct companies.

  19. While I recomend the Audigy, its the best. The C Media CMI8738 is a very high quality sound chip. It features 4.1 sourround sound, and the newest version supports 6.1. U will get better sound quality from the Audigy, however, it wont b a miles difference of that much of an improvment.

  20. I have had a few Soundblaster cards in my time and they all suck. They don't work properly with VIA chipset motherboards. In the last few weeks Creative Labs have finally admitted that they don't work (although never offered to give anyone their money back!!) and "recommend" the new Audigy cards as they "SHOULD" work. Well, I'm not taking the chance on that and have bought a Videologic Sonic Fury card (a Turtle Beach clone) for 50 quid. It has full digital in/out, 2 analogue ins and up to 6 analogue outs. Lovely software and sounds better than any previous SB card I've had.
