    I have read here that Dual DVD859 can play Divx movies. I own a Dual DVD858 which I have tried to play Divx movies without success.
    Is there a software or firmware upgrade around that I can use to enable my player to play divx?

    Probably the DVD858 and 859 use different chipsets. A firmware update won't help at all if the player's chipset can handle decoding MPEG-4.

    it happens that the player plays MPEG files, in fact it plays anything you throw into it, JPEG, .DAT, MP3, except AVI files and its variant.
    any suggestion?

    I said MPEG-4, not MPEG. By that I assume that you mean MPEG-1 or MPEG-2.
