    Hi all,

Just trying my hand on dv capture. Just bought a firewire cable and I c a popped message ' USB device not recognized' and the device is malfunctioned. I tried connecting it again but same result.

My camcorder is panasonic nv-ds25. Does it require any driver installation....I'm not sure as I don't have its booklet at the moment. I've panasonic codec and tried installing the INF file dv codec, but it says that it failed the microsoft xp logo test.

A little irritated now............what to do??

Make sure you are not trying to connect a Firewire cable to a USB port! I don't think they should physically be able to fit, but sometimes, with a little force you can connect things that shoudn't.

I connected the smaller 4 pin end to the camcorder and the larger 4 pin (again) end to the port. So you are saying that I need the firewire port I need to fix to the USB port(??)

Connecting the larger end was very easy and so I assumed the I'm connecting to the correct port. I'll get a firewire port now and c if it works.

    Many thanks

the one on the left is a 4 pin and the one on the right is a 6 pin firewire. you camcorder has a 4 pin firewire. your computer will most likely have a 6 pin, but some (mostly laptops) have a 4 pin. you will need either a 4 pin to 4 pin cable, or a 4 pin to 6 pin cable, depending on what your pc has. i hope youre not confusing the 6 pin with a usb. a usb is rectangular, while the 6 pin firewire is angled on one end.

Thats right! I've a 4 pin to 4 pin cable and the larger end easily fits in my usb port, not firewire. I've an empty slot for firewire cable, which I think I'll buy it soon.

I've to see if the larger end 4 pin fits into the angled rectangular firewire port.

    Thanks for the visual explaination.

Firewire and USB are not interchangeable. The smaler 4 pin firewire port is similar in size and configuration as a small USB cable port on the cam but they are not the same.

Also note that you may have a USB port on your cam, this is for getting still images and web quality video off the cam. It is NOT for transferring high quality video. Look at the pictures above carefully before plugging anything in.

Generally as far as firewire is concerned the 4 pin goes to the cam the 6 pin to the comp. 4 pin to 4 pin is fine too if you only have a 4 pin port on your computer. Also note that some cams have 6 pin ports, but they are rare.
