Hey there, I'm planning on purchasing a G5 iMac this coming Xmas, video
editing with FC Express is the main reason I'm leaving my PC behind for my
first Mac. The general advice I've gotten is to buy as much ram as I can
afford. I intend to buy at least 1 gig but going beyond that the prices seem
to go astronomically high on the Apple website and I'm not sure if its worth
the investment and instead just spend more money on the fastest and
largest external HD I can get. Any advice from iMac editors would be
    apprecitated, thank you.

Apple RAM prices are indeed high. What many of us do is buy Apple spec RAM from vendors that know what they're doing at competitive prices.

When I bought my last Mac, I considered how many slots I had, how much RAM I wanted, and decided to order the system with 1GB and add 4GB myself. It was like getting a couple of GB free...

You are correct that you want as much RAM as you can afford, but in this case, your total will be limited because there are only two RAM slots. BTW, this is the basis of the outrageous 2.5GB RAM option from Apple. The new iMacs use DDR2 RAM, and with only two slots, you're shopping for a 2GB ram board which is very expensive. (Anything under $500 is probably a good price, but that's still steep.)

You should be OK with 1.5GB, I have two basic FCP systems using that much and getting along fine. The Apple price is +$200, so if you want to add your own, you can save a hundred or so. Check dealram.com for current good prices on your model.

Good luck with Final Cut, I love it.
