But I mean from the computer to the Recorder so only Input would be needed!

But I have heard that some recorders somehow is locked to only work with DV cams and not accept computers!.

I wonder if JVC has this limitation??

If it is limited maybe there is some software available to trick the recorder into thinking it is hooked up to a camera??

    Day 192: June 5th, 2006

It's been 192 days since I had this unit. And amazingly it's working. I left it plugged it. Hardly ever turned it off. Burning/recording dvd day in and day out. And it has stood up with everything I have given and thrown at it.

One thing I noticed. I have encountered the dreaded LOADING blinking thing. But the interesting thing is that it only happens when you record with a bad disk (aka coaster). But it always corrected itself everytime I encountered that problem. Trust me everytime I was nervous I wouldn't have a DVD recorder ever again.

A mistake that I made was putting in a very badly burned (aka copied on CompUSA dvd-r media) dvd. It seemed to have corrupted and lost the picture for a few minutes but luckily it went back to normal. That was a close call.

I have only tried two brands of Media. TDK and Phillips. Both work great. Haven't had trouble with playback in other dvd players.

Another thing I noticed is when you play a NORMAL store bought DVD that sometimes during play the movie pauses out of nowhere. You have to hit fast forward or rewind then play and it plays like normal. It's annoying...

But other then that the unit has been working great. Without any problems what so ever...

Well, I spoke too soon I guess. I woke up Saturday Morning (12/8) and the loading bug has finally happened to me. I mean I have gotten the loading bug a few times when I was recording. But it would normally fix itself within a few minutes or so. But when I woke up and found the glowing and blinking blue like with a solid LOADING message I could tell this was something else. My DVD recorder adventure has ended after 2 years and some days now. It was an hell of a ride. Now I am going to take a look at a replacement unit. DAMN!

Funny thing is I don't think spending over 100 bucks to fix it would be worth it, honestly. Heck, I spent less then 100 for the unit.

I got the machine to work twice with a disc inside but it would fail shortly after.

I think I have fixed it myself. I have tried unplugging and replugging it. I have tried taking it apart and cleared the dust that has collected. Yeah I know, I know but I was testing it for the roughest of conditions. I have tried unplugging it for a short time. I tried all that. Then I noticed it was really cold. I mean freezing cold even though I have had it on with the power save option off for 2 years. So I turned up the heater and somehow it worked.

Now don't quote me on if the heat did the trick or not. I did many things before turning up the heater to my room. So I have no clue what made it work like normal now. But it's been working for the past 7 hours now without any problems. As if he Loading bug had never happened. I turned on the power save just incase. So that could be helping, I just don't know. I am just happy I got it to work somehow.

JVC would fix it free, you'd only pay for shipping, about $15-20.

Yes. It's manufacturer defect, and they've been honoring it for a long time now.

  12. I know a person who bought a M10S off eBay, used, no warranty. The eBay seller sold it as not working. It turned out "not working" was the loading problem.

JVC repaired it for free. The only cost was the shipping. Now the problem. If you contact them and say you opened the unit for any reason whatsoever, they will not repair it for free.

"LOADING" isn't a bug, it's a generic error message that something is wrong.
It may as well say BROKEN or FIX ME instead of LOADING.

It also happens with crappy blank discs.

Yeah the thing is I wasn't recording anything. The Loading message came on by itself. I sent JVC an e-mail so I should here back from them soon. Wouldn't the shipping be more then 20 bucks?

Marvingj. How much did you pay for shipping?

    Here's JVC's response to my e-mail:

Thank you for contacting JVC Customer Care.

I understand that your unit may be experiencing a loading error.

In effort to troubleshoot this error yourself, please try the following
    steps.

    1. Reset the unit: hold the power and stop button at the same time. The
unit will power off and start loading again. OR

    2. Unplug the unit for more than 15 min and plug it back in.

If the unit fails to function properly after this reset procedure, you
will need to ship your unit to our factory service center for
evaluation. Your unit may qualify for a free update; however, this will
be determined by the factory service center upon arrival. If it is
determined by our factory that it is indeed part of the loading update,
we will update the recorder and return it to you in a timely manner. If,
however, the factory determines this to be an unrelated issue, you shall
then receive an estimate regarding the charges to repair the recorder.
Please pack you unit carefully and include a note describing the
problem, in this case "loading," and send it in to our Factory Service
    Center. Click here http://www.jvc.com/support/support.jsp?pageID=10 to
    find one.

Please feel free to email us back for further questions or support about
    your JVC Product.

    Sincerely,

    Nancy G

So anyone thinks I should risk it and send it in?

If I do, do it. I think I would send it to the closest like the one in Cypress which is the closest to me. Any feedback on that repair center?

I just thought I'd add my experience regarding this great recorder. Got mine, I think in July 2004 (recorded many hours of '04 summer olympics with it so I know I got it prior. Like others, had the loading bug that was supposedly repaired by JVC but the Loading issue has still been an issue though much less than before. I don't use it often now as I am one that is worried about it lasting and tend to baby it a little.
As for media, I've had good experience with Verbatim 4x or 8x and Prodisc which I initially used when I purchase but then had some bad luck with Prodisc so have not used in a while. Also, have not had any issues with Fry's media which I know varies. Some Sony discs 8x packaged as GQ worked fine.
According to manual, the unit does accept RAM discs in cartridges. I guess, since the tray is kind of deep, the cart just fits in there.
In my experience with the 'Loading' issue, it always proved to be just an annoyance but has never rendered the unit unusable for more than an hour. I did turn on Power Save mode under the Function Setup menu after reading that it might help the Loading issue, may help a bit but turning on requires about a minute or so. Whenever I did get the Loading issue, even when unplugging didn't help, I found that playing with eject button or power button on unit, either by holding down one or the other for 10-30 seconds and trying repeatedly, I could always get it out of it's "Loading" stupor. I can't remember last time it happened, must have been 6 months or more ago.
I still love this thing and like I said, use now for recording weekly shows such as NipTuck or occasional movie. But I'm taking care of this thing and turn it off when not in use. It now shares recording duty with an average video quality, though reliable Toshiba D-RW2. Good Luck.

Thanks for your personal experience, MDoubleM. The thing is I too experinced the loading problem due to bad media spots. The thing would stop for 5 minutes and turn back on and resume recording. But the thing that happened to me a week or so ago. The Loading problem just popped up on it's own. I wasn't recording anything. I woke up to find the loading message and blue light flashing. That's the first time I have had that happen.

The weird thing is I can still finalize and record. But now it seems I can only record for about 1 hour and 30 minutes then BAM....loading message. Also something I noticed. When it use to hit a bad spot on a disc. It would either freeze or the sound would die. Now it goes into snow and then into loading. I have turned unplugging for 15 minutes and the resetting methods but the unit still does the loading thing. I can get it back on normal and times for that vary from 5 minutes to the max at 35 minutes. It goes back to normal. During some of those tries. The unit tried to go back to normal but would make a click sound and try reloading. It did that a few times here and there.

That's why I am asking if I should risk getting it fix because the factory guys will determine if I get a "free upgrade" or if I have to pay for whatever they do. And if it is the have to pay, would it be worth it or worth more just to get a new dvd recorder. Now don't get me wrong. This was my first DVD recorder and I loved it too death. Personally, I would recommend this unit to anyone who wants their first DVD Recorder. So I am just asking anyone for their opinion and I will make my own in the end.

  21. As long as it's not the DVD drive the factory should fix it for free(Digital board or caps). If it's the DVD drive they are going to estimate it for parts & labor, which will be a lot more than the cost of a new unit.

What new unit? Most of what you find in stores is crap, while this unit is a proven performer.

Yes, this "records for 90 mins max" nonsense is a surefire harbinger of doom with JVC decks- your unit is about to croak. In my larger projects I've used multiple JVC DR-MV5S VCR/DVD combo recorders (same DVD recording portion as the "improved" DR-M100), they are pretty sturdy but I did get a couple of "bad" ones that slowly failed over the course of a year: the usual "loading" and "snow" symptoms you've documented that are curable by a reset or unplugging from AC outlet, first once a month then twice-thrice a month, then the 90 minute record limit struck. Shortly after that the affected units no longer would make properly finalized discs: they would go thru the process normally, but if I took the disc and put it in other players it would be rejected as "unreadable".

The majority of JVC recorders hold up well and they make superb DVDs, but there is a small percentage in every production run that seems destined to fail. Doesn't matter if its the original decks with bad power parts or the later "improved" models: some of them just cannot hold their brains together for very long and slowly just fade away with heavy usage. If you start getting the "loading" flash and have to pull the plug more than once a month, the clock is ticking and you need to prepare. Try to get JVC to fix it under their extended warranty but if they tell you you aren't covered, think about replacing it. Look for another (working) JVC on eBay or Craigs List: the good thing about JVC having an exaggeratedly poor reliability reputation is good ones sell for nothing on the used market (as low as $25 if missing remote). The JVC sweet spot, the most reliable models that still used the full-featured LSI processor, were DR-M100 and DR-MV5. Earlier models are plagued by poor design in the power supply, later models have crippled recording speeds and unreliable burners. Stick to these two for the best results.

And remember, JVC is not the only brand with problem units: all mfrs have had issues and "lemons". Ironically, JVC has gotten more bad publicity than other makes mostly because JVC owners *love* the unique output quality from these machines, its almost a cult (and a justifiable one). So when they fail, their owners are more likely to freak out and talk about it.

Well, I am glad that someone else can confirm that 90 minute record thing. And when it does that it's 50/50 chances. 50% you either lose that disk forever. Or 50% the disk isn't affected and is still recordable/able to be finalized or edited. Now that's something.

What is also weird is that recently just yesterday and Monday I was able to record 2 shows that are 2 hours +. I was able to finalize both and both work great. The thing is I can't record another show after that. The loading goes back to blinking. So I seriously don't know what is up with that.

Like I said. When I bought this unit refurbished from Frys Electronics here in Cali. I have not "babyed" it. I have left the thing on every day since I got the unit. I turned the power save option off. The unit was working full force for 2 start years. With the occasional LOADING due to bad spots on my media but I lived with that. Then after 2 years and some days this came out of nowhere. I have a feeling the JVC factory repairers will say I have to pay for parts will be more then I spent on the unit. So yeah I think a new unit will be the best choice for me right now. I have a few unfinalized discs so I need to do them before the unit croaks.

Any suggestions? Any other JVC models that will be like this model but without hardly any problems like the Loading one?

Just a slight update. I was once again last night about to record for 2 hours and some minutes. I finalized the disc and works great. I went to turn off the unit and BAM. Snow then LOAIDING.

JVC did not really change anything significant mechanically in the burners until very recently. If the remaining discs are "finalizable" at all, you may be able to do them on another JVC that you pick up.

Any suggestions? Any other JVC models that will be like this model but without hardly any problems like the Loading one?
You just now mentioned you got two years hard use out of your current JVC? I can tell you, two years "hard use" from ANY dvd recorder is pretty good, and especially good from a JVC. Regarding replacement models, there are no worthwhile JVCs that do not have any "loading" issues whatsoever: it is much less likely to occur on the very newest current model JVCs but note those current models are not nearly as good as the older ones: they lack the "FR" variable bitrate override, and their burners have been failing with alarming speed after purchase. Stick to either discontinued 2005 model I recommended earlier: DR-M100 and DR-MV5. The DR-M100 is DVD recorder only, looks prettier, and commands higher prices used than its ugly-sister VHS/DVD combo recorder the DR-MV5. The DR-MV5 contains the exact same dvd recorder components as the DR-M100 but commonly sells for under $50 used, even less if you are willing to take one without a remote (your current remote from your old unit should work fine with your replacement JVC). Under hard use either model will eventually start in with the "loading" annoyances, but should last at least a year or two. However, they are MUCH less affected by "loading" than the first DR-M10 and DRM-MV1 units of 2004- those are pretty much a lost cause.

    Thanks guys.

I highly doubt it's the media. I have been only using Taiyo Yuden 8x dvds. It is something other then media I believe.

deuce8, can you explain what exactly the problem you were experiencing? And did the disc help the situation? For how long now?

My problem was it wouldnt finalize id go into reset mode and I think also it wouldnt record on the media, too sometimes. It was making the discs worthless. Its safe to say the laser was dirty. So picked up a cleaning disc at Circuit city and ran it a few times and it ended up working. Pretty much any media I used in the drm100 would work. Maxell, tdk, sony, verbatim. I wouldnt suggest you put any blank disc in your machine until you get one of these dry cleaning discs and run it through a couple of times. Do it. You shouldnt have any problems after. I havent.
