  1. i have a xp desktop pc that will error out when trying to play wav files in media player and media player classic. the wavs will play in media player 10 but with an error and a bunch of searches for codecs...
winamp will play them with no problems.

media player classic will as search for codecs when trying to play a simple mp3.

all the wavs will play fine on an other pc with xp with no problems with any media player.

if check the details of the file when media player errors out it seems to think the wav is a video clip..

i tried to download the latest codec pack from microsoft but that did not fix my problem.

any help on getting my audio codecs working again would be great.

all video files seem to work good.

You could also try opening them in Audacity and re-save them as a WAV.

I had this problem a while back, turns out it was a codec conflict with some video software I had uninstalled but it obviously didn't clean up after itself very well. I had to reregister the quartz.dll file in DirectX to get Media Player to recognize WAVs again. If you want to give that a try, in Windows go to Start>Run and type (without the quotes) "regsvr32 quartz.dll" you should get a dialog box pop up if successful. Reboot and see if the problem still exists. If so, you may have to use Gspot or Filmerit (or other codec listing prog) to check through the codecs on your system and see if you have any bad/orphaned ones - it can be a long and tricky business. If all else fails you may have to go for a Windows reinstall.

i did this still no luck. media player classic and media player still seem to treat WAVs like a video.

Gspot just said the WAVs do not need a codec?

I think I remember now that I did that after I'd got rid of the bad entries in my registry.

Sorry, I wasn't clear on the Gspot bit, what I meant was use Gspot to look for any problem codecs. To do this in Gspot (Ver 2.52), from the menu choose System>List codecs and other filters - any problem ones will be highlighted in red. This how how I tracked down my problem, and I then had to use Regedit to get rid of the references to the codec. It's possible that you might not see any problems though. In that case it'll take more work. Do you remember installing any codecs right before this problem occurred? If so, start by uninstalling them. As I said, it can be a long and thankless task trying to figure out these conflicts. At the end of the day a fresh install of Windows might be the easiest way.

  7. thank for the help Safesurfer but so far nothing has fixed the problem.
gspot may be the right tool to solve my problem.

another hint would be all audio files are being treated as video files in media player 6.4, media player 10, media player classic.
    midi, wav, mp3.
at 1st they all search for some codec then some times they will play the file.

winamp works perfect with audio files on the pc with problems.

on the xp pc that has problems playing audio files.
when using media player 6.4 under properties - advanced
these filters in use are listed.
    -cirrus logic usb-dvr2 splitter
    -default directsound device
    -mpeg audio decoder
    -nero video decoder

on the xp pc that has no problems playing audio files.
when using media player 6.4 under properties - advanced
these filters in use are listed.
    -default directsound device

i have soo much stuff on this pc i hope i can save it from a reinstall..
i think i have this problem on my last fullback...

I highly recommend Filmerit, it did a great job cleaning up DirectShow filters on my system.

  10. finally i fixed the problem.
in the end i used Filmerit to remove the codec entry.
both Filmerit and gspot showed everything as being in good working order.

i used media player classic to give me the hints i needed.
when i tried to play any one audio file some times it would bring up a prompt for me to select a video codec...
i used Filmerit to delete each of the codecs that showed up as being selectable. in the end media player classic would show filenameutput and a file no codec error.
after i got that i did start - run
    regsvr32 quartz.dll.
    now every file works perfect.
good thing to i was about to smash my pc...

thanks big time Safesurfer in the end all your advice lead me to the fix.
